Nikon D80 vs. the new Nikon D40x, which would you pick and why?

When I first looked into the D40, I wasn't as impressed. Not because of the lack of megapixels, since I really have no need for more than 6, but because of the lack of external controls. However, I did like the size of the D40 better. The D40x has more megapixels, like the D80, but still doesn't have the external controls I wanted. But I'm torn because I love the smaller size. I can't decide if I really need the external controls that much, since I am great with menus. But I think it would be nice. As it is, the D40x doesn't seem to be available yet out here. I'm hoping perhaps this will make the D80 drop in price by a hundred dollars or so, so that I can afford it. :)

I think it depends on what type of photographs you will be taking as to which camera you may need. If you are taking something that requires quick action, then the extranal controls would be more practical. If you are taking stills and have all the time in the world to toggle through the camera menus, then go with that one.

That's a good point. I'm usually taking photos where speed matters a lot. The camera has to turn on quickly and take the photo quickly. Probably better to go with the D80 I guess.
