Could the collective power of myLot influence social policy?

I've often wondered how and when the internet might become a useful and powerful tool for a society to collectively become a strong voice for reaching the ears of policy makers and those in power. I'm convinced that forums like myLot can offer such power and influence, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I guess we could send some of the links to our respective political representatives for them to experience for themselves, but I doubt they'd listen to that. Any ideas?
