Have you ever been strawberry or fruit picking?

We went strawberry picking on the weekend with the kids. We had a great time and I think we ate more than we took home. oops. There is also an apple and stone fruit orchard about 1/2 hour drive from us. We plan to do that soon also. Have you ever taken your family fruit picking or done it yourself? The fruit seems to taste so much nicer straight from the tree or vine.

I have done it many times. I have picked strawberries, tomatoes, apples, grapefuits, oranges, figs, and peaches. They taste so good right off the vine. Not like from the stores.

I grow grapes, strawberries, cherries, plums, apples, pears, figs and thornless raspberries so we do a lot of fruit picking. We also get wild blackberries in the late summer and autumn. It does taste so much better than the stuff in shops.

Wow. You must have a large property. I would love to grow some grapes and other fruit when we finally get our own place again. A few acres around you is a great thing for the spirit...

My father used to grow strawberries, rows and rows of them, my mother used to get sick of picking them, so my father pulled up all the beds, instead of using a fes, the dog used to help himself from time to time. I used to go with my brothers picking blackberries grwing wild, we used a plank to get to the fruit, blackberry bushes are very prickly.

i remember when i was like 4 or 5 my parents took my brother sister and i blueberry picking in new jersey. it was so much fun they gave you like this little belt with 2 metal coffee cans attached to it and that is where you put ur blueberries, needless to say i probably ate more then i actually put in the cans, then after that our parents took us to the beach to swim but we all got stung by jelly fish so that didn't last too long. hehehe

You sound like we were when we picked the strawberries! We ate just as many as we paid for I think. I think the farmers realise people do this and charge extra when you pay for them....

Yes I went apple picking and black berry picking. The apples made very good apple pie. Now the black berry picking took a lot of time, but it sure makes good deserts.

My husband used to do fruit picking also when he was younger. He tells me it is not easy work for the money you make.

I have gone strawberry picking in the past but it has been a long time ago. I also used to pick apples from trees as well. I do not see any of these types of trees around here anymore so it would be difficult to do this unless I traveled out of state. Sometimes the fruit is much fresher right off the tree.

Its a pity people don't seem to grow as many fruit trees now. I think they take so long to bear fruit from sappling stage. People find it easier to buy it from the supermarkets.

Yes, I have. My father-in-law grows strawberries. You are right, they do taste better. We make a family time of going to his garden and picking them. The kids really go crazy over them. We also use to go berry picking. That was always fun at first, but very tiring. By the time you were done you had had way to much. Those buckets do not fill very fast. My mom would take us and then go home and make pies or jelly.

The apples and plums we bought on the same day from another orchard were absolutely beautiful as well. The kids seem to eat more fruit when it is fresh lke that. AS soon as we put it in the fridge, they forget about it unless I remind them.

I took my children picking strawberries when they were very young and I vowed never to do it again. After we filled more than three buckets, I decided that we had enough but they were enjoying themselves so much that they wouldn't stop. We then filled two more baskets and it cost us a fortune for all the strawberries. When I came home I had to make jam out of the strawberries as there was no way I could keep them in the heat. I even had to ask the neigbours if they had empty jars that they no longer needed and then I gave them some jam, as a 'thank you' gift. I was eating jam until it was coming out through my eyes. Still, it was very enjoyable.

I have to admit it was a bit like that for us. I will have to try my hand at jam making I think as there is still a lot of strawberries left here at the moment.

I love to pick strawberrys, blackberrys, peas, and apples, when I was you we used to love to go the the garden and pick the fresh vegatables and fruit but it seems like all the places around Vegas has been cut down for houses....We are losing all of our great spots and it's sad.....

It is sad that there aren't so many places to go and pick fruit yourself. It was a wonderful day out for us as a family.

Nope, I've never been strawberry or fruit picking before. I think that would be kind of fun. Especially if it were with a child. I've never heard of stone fruit before. I've also never had a fruit straight from the tree or vine. That would taste much better than one that's been on the truck getting here.

You were lucky. There are a lot of farms around the area we have moved to, so I am looking forward to doing even more fruit gathering.

Yes, we went apple picking once, though we would make a day of it, but within 15 minutes we had more then we could eat in a month. The fruit was fresher, I think the sugar breaks down the longer it is off the vine/tree. WHich is why corn should be eaten within 24 hours of being picked. Went asparagus picking once, my son ate most of it standing in line to pay.

I really love strawberries. I really like them dipped in chocolate, but right now, I am hungry for some strawberry shortcake. However ever since I came to Canada I rarely have a chance to eat them this way. We have beautiful strawberries here, some from here some from other countries, but the problem is that "big is better" tendency I find worldwide nowadays. They look beautiful, big and perfect. But they have no taste -at least not the way I was used to. They hardly smell sweet too.

Did that for years when I was younger .... then when I first married I put in a small vegetable plot in our back yard ... just enough to keep us in most of the vegetables that we used all the time. Now divorced and have a new partner ... we bought a small farmlet a few years ago and now grow organic fruit and vegetables. So yes we do a lot of picking of fruit and vegetables ... all done by hand too because it is organic and if we want top price if means it not only being organic by in excellent condition visually. That means hand picking at this time. We grow watermelons, rockmelons, pumpkins (several kinds), tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, pes, beans, corn, peaches, plums, apricots, olives and a few other things in small quantities. We take what we want first .... freeze enough to last till the next crop comes on .... then sell the rest. They do taste better this way ... freshly picked means they aren't in cold storage losing their flavour ... not to mention that when you buy from the supermarket or fruit shop they have been picked maybe 1-3 days before despatch .... then to market ... then to wholesaler ... then to retailer ... then to customer. Most fruits and vegetables would be at least a week off the plant before they get to your shopping trolley.
