A distressing but strangely funny story

Quite a few months after my sweet little hooded rats, Lucy and Little Maggie died, I was in Pet Smart. In a cage together were 3 of the ugliest little hairless rats, but I couldn't help myself, I just had to bring them home. They were not as loving as my others, but they still captured my heart. One night I had put the dogs out so I could let my little girls out on the couch to run. They loved running under the cushions. While they were out, I had to call someone because my computer had crashed. I talked to the tech for about 30 minutes and it was decided that he would call me back. I went into the living room and sat down on the couch to await his call. I watched TV for awhile and suddenly, the rat cage caught my eye. Oh my goodness, I had forgotten about my little girls being out, so I started calling for them. They didn't come running as normal and that is when panic set in. I got up and lifted the cushion I was sitting on and there they were, the three of them flat as pancakes. I was just sick, I was crying a begging them not to be dead, I tell you I was a mess! I wrapped them in a towel to get them ready to be buried and my phone rang. I placed them in the cage and sobbing, answered the phone. It was the computer tech. When he heard me crying, he said, Oh [please do not cry, we will get your computer fixed. Now what do you think I said to him. This was so stupid and bad! I said, no, you don't understand, I am not crying because of my computer, I am crying be cause I just murdered my little girls! There was a long silence and then he said, excuse me, did you say you just murdered your little girls? Yes, I said....he was going to call the police when I came to my senses and said, not my daughters, my pet rats. I am not sure if he was more shocked by the word murder or the fact that i had pet rats lol....I do know that he was quite relieved that he didn't have to turn me in. I will choose my words carefully from now on. Like I said, it was very distressing at the time, but now, when I think of that poor guy on the phone and how his voice got so squeaky, I can't help but laugh.

Such a sad story and yet it did make me laugh a little. As I was reading your story, and it got to the part where you wrapped them in towels, and the phone rang. As you placed them in their cage to answer the phone. I almost thought you would come back and say they came back to life. I also can see this guys stomach drop as he heard you say those words. Then the relief he didn't have to get involved in a murder case LOL Good story, filled with sadness and laughter.

I was horrified at finding my little ones like that, but then when I heard the guy's reaction to what I said, I could not help but laugh at it later. I do not know what possessed me to use the word murdered lol

At least you find it funny. I can't believe that 3 animals even that small did not move or squeak. I have had mice and hamsters and I can't imagine how I would feel if I had killed them. I felt guilty when I thought I had murdered a garden lizard.

yes, I felt bad because I couldn't stop myself from laughing...not at what happened, but at my stupid remark and the tech's reaction

That is hysterical. I speak of my dogs as the boys and the lads and people just don't realize that I am talking about my dogs. You are right, they are out kids. People just don't understand us.
