Getting a dog?

I want to get a dog, ideally I want to get one who needs a new home rather than a puppy, but then I get worried as I won't fully know the temperament, even though the dog has probably been assesed, but I also have a cat and a small child. What is going to be better to rehome or a puppy? When i was small we had a loveable rehomed dog, but I doubt you get lucky twice.
