Why do people turn to God when they suddenly become very ill?

I have always wondered why people suddenly become very religious when a serious illness hits them, but not before. Dont people realize that if they would follow the ways God sets out in the Bible, Old and New Testaments, that they would actually be healthier mentally and physically all their lives?

I think it takes getting really ill for some people to start thinking outside there confort zone. I also am sure alot of it has to do with the reality that they may actually die and that scares people. I do see your point where many people do live healthier lifes because there religion gives them an outlit, but not everyone who follows a religion has that happen. Personally I would rather have someone come into a religion when they get sick then not do it at all.
