It provides alternatives to western medicine practices. When the Western doctors say to the patient, "this is the end, I can't help you," church and Chinese medicine become the final two choices for the patient to live on. I know Chinese medicine is poorer in curing lung disease but better in kidney and liver disease. For high blood pressure and cholesterol issues, it provides a cheaper and healthier option than eating chemical pills. However, my Chinese medicine teacher admits that, when it comes to severe injuries like car accidents, Western medical emergency methods win in every aspect.
