Hi! I'm so excited! I'm starting my third aquarium since I got into the hobby last August. This one will be an african cichlid tank. I think the blue and yellow ones are so pretty. I'd also like to include a jack dempsey or a firemouth or two since they are also unusual and have some flourescent coloring. The people at the pet store thought they might be territorial toward each other rather than aggressive. At the store they keep jack dempseys and firemouths in the same tank. I can't wait! Think good thoughts for me and the new fishies! :-)

Usually it's recommended not to mix South American or other cichlids with African cichlids. I would stick with a species only tank and go with strictly the Africans or strictly South American cichlids. Firemouths really aren't that aggressive unless they're mating/breeding. I have one, and he's got his little space that he defends-like you mentioned more of a territory thing. And, also with the Africans, a lot of people that keep them also recommend keeping the individual lake varieties separated as well, like Tanganyikan and Malawaian's. They come from different lakes and have different preferences/requirements. Most fish now a days are bred on a fish farm, so they can handle almost any ph, but most Africans prefer a higher ph. I'd check with the store also and see what kind of environment/ph etc. they have them in. I used to go to this really great store in Florida, they specialized in Africans. I got some really hard to find species there. Good luck!

Hi! Thanks, Signal. Actually, I was thinking about only having one firemouth. That might eliminate the aggressiveness around breeding issues. I don't think the pet store could tell me which are from which lake, they are all just labeled "african cichlids." Probably all the ones together in the store are from the same lake. I couldn't tell you which, either! Thanks for the great advice! :-)

This sounds so exciting. I have always wanted to have a really nice aquarium with lots of fancy colorful fish. I dont know very much about fish. Fish tanks are so expensive and the fish are too. It would be a great hobby and I hope you enjoy it. sound like you are having a wonderful time with your new hobby.

Hi! Thanks, Villageanne! Yes, I really enjoy fishkeeping. They all just have such different little personalities, it's so fun to watch them interact with us and with each other. Yes, it is expensive, though. That's the bad part. There are people who have said they've gotten their fish and aquariums fairly cheap, but I live in a rural area, so I pretty much have to get what's available here. :-)

If you are going to put those types of fish together maybe do it at the same time so no one has established dominance yet. If the tank is large enough they shouldnt bother eachother. Good luck with your tank!

Hi! Thanks for the good advice! Yes, that's what I'm planning to do - introduce them into the tank all at once. Like you said, that way no one establishes dominance right away. :-)
