Don't You Hate It When You Bite The Inside Of Your Jaw

I hate this more than anything. It seems like after you do that one time you just keep on doing it over and over. How does it ever happen? Why do we even do it? I can go years without doing this, then BAM! I bite the crap out of my jaw. Are we afflicted in some way? How do you avoid doing this?

I think it cannot be avoided, but it can be lessened. I always stretch my jaw, practice it by opening and closing my mouth or even try to chew a gum so that my jaw be on their proper alignments. Also when I eat, I munch the food with my mouth closed.

yes, this is annoying indeed. i do bite the tissues and hate it when i do it again second and third and more times at the same pace. i think we have a tendency to bite the same place as it becomes more vulnerable and protuding. i donot know how to avoid it, but know for sure that more i want to be careful, the more i get bitten!!

Yes everytime I do this I try to find out how, so I will not do it again. I think you are right it becomes swollen and protrudes and then we just keep biting the same spot.

I hate it too. When I bit the inside of my jaw the wound will last for almost a week to heal. Sometimes biting my tongue is as worst as that. I think the inside of our jaw is called "buccinator". It happens to me in seasonal basis that when it happens, it keeps on repeating then it would stop happening for a long time before it would happen again.

I think I bite my tongue so often I am accustomed to it. The jaw thing is less often so it seems to hurt longer.

Oh yes, I've done that lots of times. I hate it when I do it and it seems like I just keep biting it. Then when it's starting to get better then I'll bite it again and it takes even longer for it to get better.

I thought it was personal punishment for eating bad things....LOL....I , too hate to "start the cycle"...it seems that once you "chomp your cheek" it swells and causes you to repeat the painful procedure many times!!! Although recently I bit the inside of my cheek then the next day I bit my lip on the opposing side..my mouth was a mess for a week...the dentist said it usually happens because we are eating "too fast" and not concentrating on our chewing!!! I know that when I got a new crown on my tooth I bit my lip about 10 times in a month...guess I'm a fast eater and a slow learner....

LOL I must be a fast talker and eater and a very slow learner too. Maybe it is caused by a shift in our teeth alignment.

haha, i do this all the time and it really hurts. I think it a result of over enthusiastic chewing, maybe if we only chew calmly and slowly then it doesnt happen blessed be

I hate that too. It seems like when I do it though I'll do it again while it is still sore. I don't know why.

Owww owww owww .. it's hurts and hurts doesn't it .. just chomping on a nicely delicious piece of food .. and BLAMM you chomp down on a bit of flesh or your tongue .. ggaaarrrr ... ouch ouch ouch .. then it makes a sore spot .. and you can bet your life next time you eat your teeth will clamp down on that little sore spot once again .. Because of my fibro (sigh, yes that again!) .. I get more than my fair share of mouth ulcers .. I have to be soooo careful then not to bite one as they can take weeks to heal .. You would think that we would know how to eat without biting ourselves wouldn't you ... hehehe

Yes, I hate it too. I have got into this situation so many times. Mostly during eating. Instead on biting on the good, the teeth bit into part of the jaw or tongue. After that, I'd have some ulcers coming up. This makes it worst for the next few days. I do not know if there is any good way of avoiding being bitten accidently in our jaws or tongue but I just hope that it don't happen again when I am eating.

I dont do it very often but when I do, it is a doozy. I hate and it hurts for for hours. It interfers with eating and drinking. I dont think there is a way to avoid doing it. It just happens. I wonder why it does happen??

I hate this too! I´m not sure why it happens the first time, but after that, the tissue swells up and it just gets in the way of our teeth. I have scar tissue ridges in my mouth from biting myself so much when I was little.

Yeah I thought it probably had to do with some swelling.

I don't know why it happens, but it hurts really bad.I can take the pain, but when you have to eat and something spicy touches that part ,it burns.I use an oral ointment to relieve the pain and it works well for me.

I don't know how this happens. It is one of those involuntary movements that we make occasionally and after we do it once, I think it swells and causes us to do it over and over. Not too long ago I bit my tongue. I had never done that before. Again, it was an involuntary movement. These are symtoms of more serious things like Tourette's Syndrone but I don't want to even contemplate that. I think our bodies just short out occasionally.

Lol... I have come over this so many times in my life! And it is sure hurtfull because every time when I bite, the next day it will turn out to be ulcers. I will take more than a week to heal. During the healing process, I can barely eat or drink anything without saying 'ouch!' all the time. I just don't know how to avoid it 100% but I have a tip told by somebody. Usually when we eat, our mind is concentrating on chewing the food. However, if we are busy thinking about something else, then we will accidentally chewed on our inside jaws. It just seems that our mind will be distractracted and therefore made it confused a little. So I think, when eating try to concentrate on the food only. Don't think too much about other stuff. Don't talk too much while chewing.

Good advise thanks I will try to concentrate on the food. I am always doing a few other things while eating so maybe this is why it happened.

Yes it can happen sometimes or I can even bite my tongue and it's annoying thing because there's nothing much that you can do about it but to wait for it to heal, it can be many years as you said, i can't remember an exact reason, maybe eating fast or having large bites.

Well for me I have TMJ issues, and one of the things I learned from going to a TMJ specialist is the reason why we bite the inside of our mouths is because they are not lined correctly...I have the same problem, it doesn't happen often, but often enough I had to ask about it... It hurts, it gets sore and it's annoying..I feel your pain..lol

I thought this may be the problem. I am going to tell my dentist and see if they will do something to correct the alignment. It has not happened in over 10 years and now it just happened. Something must have shifted!

I hate it when that happens. Why does it just happen suddenly. After that ofcourse since its swollen we end up biting it again and again and the swelling takes so long to go down because of it. Its a vicious cycle.
