well I wanted to know why some college professors give bad grades to students on a paper that was written to the student's best ability

Because grades aren't based on how hard you try, they are based on the quality of your work. The teacher shouldn't just give you a good grade like a handout, it should be based on if you really deserve it. Anything less is unfair to the other students or prospective employers that think you are smarter or understand the material better when in reality you aren't as proficient or talented, you just try hard.
