DVD Players In Your Car

What are your opinions about having DVD Players that are built into your car for the kids to watch as they ride in the car? Do you feel these are necessary? Why or why not? I personally think they are totally unnecessary with the exception of long car trips. I was behind a mini van yesterday when I went to town. I could see the screen through the back window. It was playing a Disney movie. Later I found out that the van was my cousin's wife and she was playing the movie for her 9 month old daughter on their way to Walmart.(I know because I saw her in the parking lot) Come on! Kids watch too much tv as it is! Is it so hard for them to ride in the car for less that half an hour without their noses stuck in a screen?! I remember when I was a kid, we didn't have those. When we were in the car, even on long trips we had to entertain ourselves. We played games, read books and listened to music. Kids today are just not using their imagination or their creativity anymore and it is scary!

We have a portable DVD player. We use only for really long drives and sometimes when we are out fishing and the little one needs a quite rest time. I know that somehow we managed to survive without it with our first child but now I don't know what I would do if I didn't have it.

I think this is a cool way to relax the passengers especially for long trips. You should just be aware that this can be hot item for bad car thieves. Just beware of the car thieves especially when parking your car.

I agree, kids are too used to being entertained and aren't learning how to entertain themselves. I encourage my grandkids to draw and color, and try to keep them from gluing themselves to the TV or video games while they are here. But I can see how on a very long trip, a DVD player might help them pass the time quietly. I remember long trips to my granmother's house, even with the books and crayons and games it seemed like forever.

I feel DVD player in car is equally dangerous for driver. it will make loose driver control while driving.

I do own a prtable DVD player which I use for long trips. When we are not going that far I use things like coloring books and travel games. My kids love them. Like you I have seen people with them when they go to the store. I have even seen them have more than one if there was more than one child in the car. I don't understand it either.
