I was quite surprised to come in here tonight and see that no threads had been started in celebration of International Womens' Day. So I thought I would start one. It has been going for 95 years now, and is basically in recognition of womens' place in society. I guess I know a lot about it, because it is very much a "big" celebration in Argentina, and my partner comes from there, so I always get flowers, and gifts today instead of on Valentine's Day. Anyway, it is not just an excuse to receive gifts, it is a serious day marked to celebrate women everywhere, and to try and improve the conditions of women all over the world. If you want to read more about it, here is a link to a website about it, and information on some issues that the UN have focussed on in the name of International Womens' Day. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/womensday1.html

I knew about it. It's not nearly as big of a deal in the United States as it is in Argentina, but I think it's important. There is much work to be done in terms of improving conditions for women worldwide. Thanks for bringing it up!

I am sorry to reply a bit late in the day. I knew about International Women's Day, and, thanks to my elderly female colleague, we had a special screening of the movie Volver, by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, at college, after the Women's Day Talk about Domestic Violence and the laws that protect women from it. However, as the movie showed the inadequacy of the laws to meet the demands of a victimised woman who needs a lot of privacy and safety from the public eye, there were more discussions after the movie. there were not flowers for all women, which could have been fantastic, but in a developing country like India, the money sepnt for such things can perhaps be used for some women who really need help. I am really interested in the Women's Day has such a big significance in Argentina!

To be honest, I had not ever heard of this day before. Thanks for sharing this news with us. You would think after 95 years I would have known about this, but I didn't. Thank you for posting this link also.

Well i've got to be honest and say that I had no idea it was such a special day, in fact I didn't even know it had been going for 95 years - how sad am I??!!! It doesn't seem to be mentioned here in England at all, well, not that I've noticed anyway. So to all you women out there - HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY!!! is there an international mans day or is that every day haha!!!

No - you're not sad Gina. I admit I had never heard of it either until I met my man, but he is from Argentina, and they make a realy big deal of it there for some reason, so I kind of got introduced to it through him! And yes - I think you're right - every other day of the year is Mens' Day - LOL!!
