A Hard Headed and Arrogant Brother

Philippines

My youngest brother is with me because my mother left for the United States 3 months ago. He is 19 and if not for this culture that we have in the Philippines, he would have been independent. I have nothing against his being under my guidance but I don't like the arrogance and the hard headedness. Last week, he was apprehended by the LTO for driving without license and I was of course, angry. I didn't even know he was driving because we don't have any sort of vehicle at home. I tried talking with him but he always reasons out that he is not at fault-- something I hate so much. So I told my mother that I am giving up because that wasn't the only instance that I was in that situation concerning him. If you were in my place, what would you have done?

It seems like you are babysitting? In my country one is considered a man when he turns 18. Some teens this age continue to live with their parents, but they usually have rules to follow. Your brother needs to grow up and take responsibility for himself and his actions. Why he lacks respect for you, i don't know. Maybe he has a friend who he can stay with? I apoligize if i have been no help, i hope things get better, Take care Jean_rose.

You are right, friend. It seems I am babysitting and I don't like it one bit. In the Philippines, we have this culture that encourages "parasitism" among the young generation. They aren't trained early in life to stand on their own two feet. My brother had been spoiled by my mother. I just wish she brought him with her to the States.

He now is an adult and should be on his own. I would give him an amount of time to get a job save some money and get himself a place of his own to live. Hopefully not too far away so you can keep an eye on him.
