Why do cats always have to be on the highest shelf in the house.I love them but why do they always have to knock everything over or down.At night when I go to bed everything is neat then in the am there is always something knocked over.We have 4 cats that I adore but sometimes when I clean up the messes I get tired of it.And the hairball pukes are another issue. Now tell me why a half way intelligent woman keeps 4 kitties that are a pain in her butt? I'll tell you why.Because for every bad thing they do they will do 10 good things. When I'm sick in bed they come in and sleep on my bed with me . They talk to me when I walk around the house and want to be held when I sit watching TV.They love me and forgive me when I trip over them or forget to give them a treat. They never let me watch a movie by myself and they like all my favorite shows. They sometimes entertain me with their most recent tricks.Sometimes it's a multi cat act. What's your cat story?

I've come to a few conclusions on this. Hope the first (the real one) is helpful =) 1. They know you don't want them up there and feel like they're the boss if they do things like this. 2. They're members of a secret cat spy network. 3. They're stalking your cottage cheese and plotting their attack?

I think for them it's a game. You know like with babies, how often can I drop this and mommy will pick it up for me. That's the only thing I can think of. Of course we have very clumsy cats. They knock stuff over all the time. I wouldn't trade one of them though. They are each unique and all of them make my life a bit better. Right now we have 10, yes ten cats :) Most are rescues. They give me a lot of love and understanding. Of course my one this morning tried I think to give me a shoulder massage while I was on toilet of all places. He jumped up behind the toilet (there is a shelf there) and then got up on to my shoulders. He then walked back and forth across them. It some spots it really hurt but in others it felt good. Problem was he wouldn't get off. I had to call my niece to come get him off me because I was afraid he'd fall and claw me by accident. Have to wonder about them sometimes.

I have one that climbs behind when I sit in bed with my computer and kneads on my back. It feels great. Thanks for posting R

Love your post :) When my mother was bedridden at the end of her life, our cat lay on the bed close to her all the time, but after she had to go into the hospital, the cat never laid there again. I remember one of the carers remarking on the cat lying there keeping her company. As far as the shelf thing is concerned, that's a cat status thing. The cat that occupies the highest spot is in a dominant position over the other cats, and is "top cat" for as long as they are there. If its the same cat who always gets up on the top shelf all the time, then she/he is the dominant cat of your four. How to prevent "top cat" from knocking all your bits and pieces off? Simply provide them with there own shelf which must be higher than the shelves that you don't want them to go on. That might work, but I can't guarantee that. Even if "top cat" was occupying the top shelf, one of the subordinate cats won't still try to get on to your ornament shelves. Another approach might be to find out how they get up there, and block that route so that they cant get up on the shelf at all.

I love cats too. I like chubby cats. To answer your question, maybe they just want to tell the whole world or the master that they're on top of everything, on the of the world, their world.

I agree, they are the quite the cuddliest of companions. I think they go to the highest shelf because 1) the view is better, and 2) they can. :)

I have a few more than 4 cats, but I know what you mean. I try to not have anthing the cats can break where they can get to and have a few cat free rooms in the house. I've been known to have 9 or 10 cats in bed with me at night - hey maybe I don't have fibro, just sleep deprevation! (ha) I love my babies, I have 2 "bottle babies" Taj turns 5 around April 1st, he was found at 4 weeks & didn't spend a lot of time on the bottle. Oliver, who will be 1 1/2 on April 1st, on the other hand, was found at a week. He is much more typical of a bottle baby and is the black & white kitten in my avatar. The bigger cat in the avatar is Oliver's "uncle" Rygel, who taught him to be a cat, he started helping us out when Oliver was 4 weeks old. I have pix in my profile of my cats, check it out!

I've only had one cat ever do that stuff and found a new home for it. I don't like my cats on the counters, table, etc. and if they refuse to stay off then out they go. That one cat would open the top kitchen cabinets and hide in them all the time no matter what I did to stop him from doing it. Drove me nuts cause he knocked alot of dishes out of my cabinets in order to hide in them, breaking em in the process.

I've go a cute kitty called Tia and we love her even though she is really arrogant! When Niall was a baby we had a cat called Barney that thought he was a dog - he was always where the baby was and used to protect him from strangers!
