Are promises supposed to be kept?

I remember one incident when I was still a child, my grandma promised that she will take me to the zoo but when the day she promised came, she cancelled it. I was so upset that I cried the whole night. For me no matter how simple or complex a promise is it should always be kept. Because in the first place if you really did not intend to do something then don't make promises at all as broken promises are upsetting.

I think the saying is for our own pleasure and not to blame others if some have failed to keep promises with you. When somebody made a mistake like this, you are supposed to take it as an experience that how worst the impact could be, so that you can understand the depth of the hurting one faces. When you understand this perticular pain, I am sure you can make yourself strong and firm in keeping promises. Your grandma taught you the subject as kind teacher of you. That is why you now are serious about the promises which are for keeping and not to be forsook. Because these promises when you can keep you can walk the path which is miles long in life to go. Wish you a kind & sincere heart to keep the promises.

Yes promises are to be kept a secert. And it is to be a exact thing that will happen if you promise it not just a maybe thing. If you promise you keep that promise and do what ever you say you will do is the way I raise my childeren. That's all my thoughts on promises.

Good for you that you set a model to your children about keeping promises :)

i personally think that promises are meant to be broken... Haha! But i do agree with you that if you have no intentions of doing something, then you should not make any promises. =)

We cannot always keep what we say... so if we never intended to do it....then don't make promises at all. Thanks for the comment :)

Promises should always be kept, but hardly anyone ever actually follows through with a promise. I find this sad, as I too have experienced what you did, but I guess its just the way it is. I hardly make promises, and if I do, its always a pinky promise. Its something my friends and I have done for years, and if we use it, we never break it.

If I make a promise, I make it as simple as a doable as possible so I won't have an excuse not to do it. thanks for the comment.

yes they should be I went thru a similiar incident when I was little the circus was in town and mom had promised to take us to see the elephants back then they walked through part of town. I was so excited!!!! The day came and mom said we r not going. I said buy mommy u promised and she told me well u may as well learn promises r meant to be broken. It took me a long time to get over that. I don't take or make promises lightly at all but if one's made to me it better be kept and If I make one it always is!!!!

Yes, we should keep our promises. Otherwise, we will make people upset. Once you did a broken promise, others won't believe you anymore. So, I don't want to make a promise if I can't do it.
