Yes they can. I dated a guy in high school 20 years ago. We dated for 2 years. Things didn't work out for us but we have remained great friends. We see each other often being this is a small town we live in. I even get along great with his wife who is a wonderful person. Its great being friends with your exes instead of harboring hard feelings.

Thats easier said than done because I would imagine a very small % actually remain friends. There are not many relationships that end mutually, on good terms, so that in itself makes it difficult to remain friends
I have contact with a lot of ex girlfriends, but none I am overly "close" too.
There is friends, then there's "friends" - all depends how close you want to be, because stay too close, and feelings inevitably end up resurfacing or never actually going away, no closure

I have no problem about that, but he does. So we're not friends anymore.
