Are you prepared for a disaster?

Ruins from an earthquake - These ruins are constant reminders of the damage that can be done here by an earthquake.

There have been a lot of natural disasters in the past couple of years. Have they motivated you to prepare? We had a series of earthquakes here in Guatemala (caused by volcanic activity) that were pretty scary, although they didn“t do any damage. It prompted me to start a survival kit with stuff like soups, matches and the like, stored away from the house so it would be easy to find in case everything collapsed.

Oh yes, we also have plenty of oil lamps for lights, as well as candles and matches. We also have extra lighter fluid too. We have had a few big fires here, a few earthquakes and a flood last year, but so far we have been lucky and only lost power.

I live in Nicaragua so there are similar problems here with earthquakes as there are in Guatemala. I have some food on hand but not a lot. I always keep candles and matches because we have frequent power outages here in this country that last anywhere form 30 minutes to four or five hours. The earthquake thing is pretty new to me since I have only been here for two years and I find it kind of frightening. I guess I need to be better prepared as far as having non perishable foods on hand.

No.. I have enough things in my house to eat and drink for about a week on a general basis.. the only natural disaster I'd have to worry about is a tornado, and that's over in 10 minutes. A terror attack however, Id be in trouble. I dont have my y2k kit anymore.

Yes actually. We run off of oil heat, however we have a wood stove in our house. I know how to cook on it if nessissary. ( Though i prefer the regular stove!) We have our own well, which also has a hand pump attached so we can get water. We have chickens for eggs and meat. We also keep a food pantry, right now i have over 500 different canned goods items, as well as 20 lbs of flour and sugar each. 15 lbs of varous noodles and at least 20 lbs of rice. We are pretty well set up because we live far from town so we shop once a month and always buy extra to fill the pantry with. I think if we had some kind of issue where we couldent leave and get food we would be fine. Storage away from the house isnt an option now because of the season and cold. However in summer there is always a few tubs of food stored outside.
