adversities

The outcome of an adversity is determined by your reaction to it. If you keep a positive attitude and try to learn from it, while keeping faith that it will get better and that you will come out of it stronger, then it will. God prepares us for things by testing us, and by giving us trial to overcome that will prepare our character. If we never had any adversities, we wouldn't have our 'testimony', and we wouldn't have the inner strength needed to do the work that is destined in our lives. But if we look at an adversity as negative, that God is just out to get us, and pity ourselves, then nothing positive will come of it.
