How do you handle a situation when your best friend has a drinking problem and he his hesitating to acknowledge it openly?

I have been in that situation except that I had the addiction. Now after many years on the wagon, I wish my friends had of talked to me about it back then. Now if someone close to me has a problem I will talk to them.
