Hot Sandwich Recipes

As a busy mom, I look for convenience dinners on work nights. Something wholesome and well rounded. I steer away from frozen dinners and canned meals (Spaghettio's, etc.) because my kids don't need the salt and they need more balance than those type of dinners can offer. I make hot sandwiches for dinner at least once a week, and serve them with a side of veggies or a crisp salad. One of my son's favorites are the Sausage Sandwiches. Taken similar to a recipe that we served at an old resturant I used to work at...And please share your busy evening sandwich recipes too! Sausage Sandwiches 1 lb. bulk sausage Sandwich rolls (any flavor) Sliced Mozzarella Pizza Sauce Sliced onions and bell peppers, optional Preheat oven to 375. Press sausage into 11 X 7 baking dish, making sure it is level throughout the dish. Bake for at least 40 minutes, or until meat becomes dark on top. (Sometimes this can take closer to 50) Cut meat in rectangles in the baking dishes, to fit the sandwich rolls. Set aside. Leave oven on. Take sandwich rolls (slice open long ways, if necessary) and add pizza sauce to the bottom half. Top with sausage and a slice of Mozzarella. Put back in oven for about 4-5 minutes or until cheese is thoroughly melted. Remove from oven, top with fresh onion and bell pepper if desired. Enjoy!

I love making hot presses sandwiches in my George Foreman grill. Really all you need for this is some good crusty french bread, and any combonation of your favorite sandwich fillings. I'm of the opinion that the more cheese involved, the better the sandwich will be. Make you sandwich on the french bread and then put on the foreman grill. Don't be afarid to really press down on it and squish the bread (crumbs are much easier to clean up that meat juices!). keep an eye on your sandwich. Once you see the cheese start to melt, and fancy grill markes on the bead. You dinner is ready. There is a sandwich shop down the street that charges $8 for one of these grilled beauties. I sit at homes eating my home made one and laugh!

LOL awesome! You know I am glad you had replied to my discussion saying you use the George Foreman grill. Does it grill like a gas or chracoal grill flavor-wise? Where I live I have no room for an outdoor barbecue, and I miss having chicken, burgers, etc. off the grill! I would be interested in knowing all the uses of it and how well they compare to other methods of cooking. Thank you!

Well I won't say the flovor is as good as grilling outside. But it's not bad. And if you are pacient you can get the grill lines on your food like you would on an outdoor grill. I find the foreman is best for really fatty things, since the fat runs down into the tray. I'm more likely to use mine for bacon, sausage, or burgers. Chicken tends to get a little dry. My mom used to have an indoor electric grill. That was pretty neat. Maybe you could look into something like that....or or a cast iron skillet with grill lines. Those are pretty good too. :-)

I had overlooked your reply until just now-sorry! Anyway, I have seen them, and know they are very good for fattier meats. But that is kind of disapointing is isn't very beneficial for every kind of meat. I don't think I have ever seen an indoor electric grill, but I have seen the kind that are on a stove top along with the burners. Is it similar to that?

Here is a different one. Make blue berry pancakes, and fry an egg up. Make it a sandwich using the pancakes as the bread. Boil some pasta, drain, then fry in butter in a large pan on the stove med/high until crispy. Add chopped cooked meat or chopped cooked chicken to it while it is getting crispy, cover with cheese and more butter and garlic. No bread required. Fold in half when finished.

Sounds strange though-the combination of a fried agg and chocolate chip pancakes? Do the flavors blend better than what we would think?

It's really good. You can make them plain, with fruit or your choice, or chocolate chips.

Yes, it sounds very good. I love roast chicken sandwiches from any restaurant, I am sure they can't be too hard to make at home. How do you make garlic mayonnaise? Or do you buy flavored mayonnaise from the store?

hmmm let me try too French Toasted Ham Sandwich * 3 eggs beaten * 1/2 cup milk * 1 teaspoon sugar * 1/4 teaspoon salt * 12 slices bread * 4 to 6 ounces thinly sliced ham * 1/4 cup butter Combine eggs, milk, sugar, and salt; whisk together. Top 6 slices of bread with the ham; cover with remaining bread. Dip each sandwich into egg mixture. Heat butter in large skillet over medium-low heat. Brown sandwiches on both sides, about 5 minutes on each side. Cut sandwiches in half; arrange on hot platter. Makes 6 sandwiches. These can be made in a sandwich maker.

Wow, some great ideas here! I saw a couple people post our favorite.... Hot meatball subs. I buy the frozen meatballs and heat them up in some spaghetti sauce then put them on a sub roll and sprinkle it with mozzarella cheese. They are very good.

These sandwiches are made exactly the same as a meatball sub. Just sausage instead. The restaurant I worked for prepared them the exact same way.

Yes you are right that it is not good to give your children too many frozen foods or canned meals as this is not healthy for them, you have to give them something wholesome, so that their bodies grow properly. I like to make corn beef sandwiches for my children with tomato and onion, if they like a bit of cheese this is also good as it is a dairy product so this is what we eat when we have a quick dinner.

That does sound good-and quite different too! Do you take leftover corn beef brisket?

I always use palin old bulk sausage, but I bet it would be good with a flavored sausage like garlic. Maybe next time I plan to make them I will pick that up instead.

Here is one of our favorites: Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound beef round steak, cut into thin strips sweet pepper strips, cut into 1/4 inch strips 1 medium onion, sliced into rings 4 hoagie rolls (long sandwich rolls) split lengthwise and toasted 8 oz. American cheese or Velveeta (or any other cheese) 1 teaspoon dried oregano, salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute beef until lightly browned. Stir in sweet pepper and onion, and season with oregano, salt and pepper. Saute until vegetables are tender, and remove from heat. Divide beef mixture into the buns. Top with cheese and place sandwiches on a baking pan. Heat sandwiches in preheated oven, until cheese is melted or slightly browned. Yum-- you won't believe how GOOD this is!

It sounds very good! But if you use round steak, doesn't the meat get really tough when you fry it?

When I was a kid my mom made something that I can't remember the name of now. She would take a hamburger bun - but I'm sure any kind of bread would work, put a slice of cheese, a tomato, some cooked - left over bacon & stick it under the broiler. I really don't remember the order, because I wouldn't eat the bacon ones. Mine were cheese & tomato. I bet it would be devine to put some fresh basil or oregeno on it and chop up the tomato. maybe some chopped up tomato with the herbs then melt the cheese over this - think I'll talk to the lady I work for & see if she'd like to try this - she was saying she wanted something different to eat....

Wow-bringing back memories! I used to have a fovrite sandwich very similar to that at an old coffee shop my friends and I visited quite often while we were in high school. It was a whole wheat bagel, topped with a white cheese and a tomato slice and then I think I was basil on top. It was spectacular. I think next time I hit the store I will try to make a mock version and pick up some of those type bagels. Thanks!

Somewhat. I love to cook and have tried a hand at many ethnic recipes. I have a very good spaghetti recipe though-LOL. I like it and everyone I serve it to raves about it too! It is completely homemade and takes a few hours to make, but I think it is well worth it.

Grilled Tunafish for 2 4 slices of unseeded rye bread (or any bread available) 1 can tunafish, drained 2 heaping tbsps Miracle Whip (or mayo) 1 tbsp pickle relish 1 teas onion powder (or 1/4 cup onions, diced) 3 tbsps margarine or butter 2 slices pepperjack cheese (or your choice) In a bowl mix everything except the bread. Butter 2 pieces of bread on one side. Put in pre-warmed skillet set on low fire. Spoon tuna salad onto bread in skillet and flatten corner to corner, add one slice of cheese to each. Yum-I love tuna! I haven't had a tuna melt sandwich in along time! But yes. I will be sustituting the rye bread for a hearty wheat bread. I don't care much for rye, but with pepperjack, your sandwich sounds outstanding!

Now that is something I never thought of- Hot sausage sandwiches. We do sandwiches usually once a week too- Toasted cheese, grilled ham and cheese, tuna melt, bbq pork. I love it when we have a big dinner on Sunday and have meat left over for sandwiches. We even do turkey or chicken with gravy- YUM! I love sausage and so does my family- Thanks for giving a new suggestion!

It is very good! You can substitute a hot sausage too, I am sure if your family prefers that. Of course with 2 kids, we don't sever too many hot things at the dinner table. I love making sandwiches because they don't take much time but are absolutely delicious! Grilled cheese is great too. I have a "Baked Cheese" recipe as opposed to "grilled cheese" but it is very similar- (For 1 serving:) 1 thick slice of Sourdough or French bread (regular sandwich bread) ham and turkey lunchmeat cheese Place turkey and ham on bread and top with a slice of your favorite cheese. Bake in oven at 350 for about 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve open-face. Of course you can double, triple, this recipe to meet your family's needs. It tastes wonderful! And omits a LOT of fat because it requires no butter. To me, it tastes like a cafe lunch item!

thanks for the great idea i will try it out on my younger brother when he gets home from school as he is always heading for the crisps and chocolate so hopefully this will help him to sort it out, also if you find it hard giving your children vegetables well i have found a great way of giving them more than 5 a day, all you got to do is make a fruit smoothie and add vegetables to it but your child wont know as the fruit wil hide the taste away.

Thank you fro the tip. I love smoothies! What type of vegetables do you put in yours that you cannot taste? Have you ever made a vegetable smoothie? I know that seems different, but if you have, I was just wondering if that alone is any good.

I love to make hot roast beef sandwiches. Its simple. Just cook some roast beef and onion in a skillet, than prepare the sandwich. I like to use lots of provolone cheese, which I melt in the oven or microwave before I put the meat on. Also I good idea is a sandwich macker. It makes hotpoctet like sandwiches. You can put whatever type of filling combination in that youd like. They are awesome!

You know I have a sandwich maker (that has the removable hot plates that also came with the waffle grids. That is what I have always used it for.) I had never thought of making a sandwich on there! LOL. I will hae to give it a try. What kind of bread do you use to mock a hot pocket sandwich?
