Exchange links. How does it works

I have recently posted that I want to submit my website to top search engines but some body told me that I should also go for link exchange. But what exactly happens in link exchange will any body explain me. And does this link exhange have any bad effect on my Google adsense acount? If not please give me names of some good free link exchange sites.

The more links you have to your page, the more Page RANK you will get, and more Page rank you get, more results on search engines will appear ... so more visitors to your site. Hope it helps.
