Reservation will divide the society along caste lines

During the british reign, it was proposed that the scheduled castes be treated as a seperate community and granted seperate reservations under the Govenment of India act 1935. But the historic fast of Gandhiji prvented it.After independence, the constituent Assembly formed the Advisory Committee on Fundemental rights and minorities headed by sardar Vallabhbhai patel. The committee recomended apecial privilage to the Scheduled castes & scheduled tribes for a limited period. The privilege was meant fot the upliftment of the lower caste, but it has becme a gross abuse in the hands of self-centred politicians. The special provision were primarily for a limited period of ten years from the date of taking effect of the constitution on january 26,1950.There is no provision of a fixed period for the continuation of this privilage. The ten years period of constitution safegaurds continued to be extended each time by ten years, before the period of earlier ten years expired. The very cocept of reservation is against the essence of the Preamble to the Constitution of India which promises equality of status & opportunity. Once a cocession or any kind of privilege is extended to a particular class it is impossible foe any Government to withdraw it in a democracy where voting decides the fate of any party. Indian democracy is called by some thinkers as mobocracy, where the illiterate mob deciedes the fate of the political parties. The privilege of reservation once given is extended every time as the withdrawal of this privilege if voted to power. This issue of reservation has become a political cocession to grant votes.

I completely agree with ur views here. There has to be full stop for priveleges based on caste but merit should be the main basis. But it doesn't happen in india. Those who have caste certificate can bridge the gap that some meritorious students have attained through hardwork regardless of caste.I feel more importance should be on the poverty rather than caste, its high time our politicians think about it.and act accordingly. But alas they are pretty much short sighted and only know about how to maintain their votebanks.
