On writing

As a child, I have always loved writing. Now that I'm a college student majoring in English and European Literature, and I'm taking Creative Writing classes, I am on my way to becoming a writer (successfully, i hope). Along with my Creative Writing classes, I am also taking up Critical Theory classes that basically teach "writers-to-be" on how to write good literature. Now, I am at a lost. I find it hard lately to write anything worth-reading. Whenever I do attempt to start writing (my leanage's in short story writing) I get self-conscious. I think of all the rules that a few theorists (like Aristotle, etc) on writing well. These rules are at the back of my head and they're all I think of when I write. In effect, I won't get to finish anything even after hours of pondering. I know the themes and the plots I want to write about, but I can't seem to string these into sentences, even at futile attempts. What do you think? Do we all have to strictly follow the rules in writing, or just write whatever we want without thinking of what the critics would say?

My advice would to be to forget all of the rules for the moment. Write what wants to come out. Get the story down on paper so you know what you want to say and where you want it to go. Then go through and use the rules that apply to strengthen it. Not all rules will apply. Pick what works with your storyline. Most of all forget the critiques. They shouldn't dictate what you write, but how to improve what you've already done. There's a good discussion here on mylot under "writing" about critiques.

Thank you. I guess I really can't help thinking about the rules since I've been studying them for the whole semester. But yes, thank you again for the piece of advice :)

I know what you mean. I've done a lot of studying on the craft of writing, and what I read is what jumps out at me at the time. But it comes down to that right brain/left brain thing. I try not to even reread what I've written until I get done, otherwise I don't get anywhere. I get too busy trying to perfect it, then I lose what the storyline is about.

I know what you mean! I know the plot, I know how the story would start and end. It's just that I can't seem to string them all.
