There seems to be a lot of food questions on here just now and this one is a constant argument in my house just now so I thought I'd find out what everyone else thinks! My 13 year old son wants chips with everything while my 5 year old daughter is not keen on them and wants potatoes all the time. Who likes what and why? Weemam I'm sorry but you didn't offer me any rice pudding so this is my revenge!!!

Ewww did you mention those horrid words, rice pudding! Tell weemam you are welcome to my large portion (rice pudding that is!) I've never eaten it after being served it for school dinners, put me off for life. Sorry, I digress here well I'm siding with your 13 year old son, chips with everything! But they HAVE to be OVEN chips, I can't abide them cooked in the fat fryer or out of the chippy, far too greasy and yukky! I hate those boiled potatoes. Jacket potatoes or chips every time for me!

How can you not like rice pudding - espescially if its got cinammon? Anyway we usually always have oven chips but before we got rid of the deep fat fryer I used to love making REAL chips , you know parboiling them in water first and then frying them - yummy! When I was really young I hated boiled potatoes and my great aunt told me she'd make sure I ate them and would ask for more! Well I was a bit worried cos everyone said she was a battle-axe! Well she made me boiled potatoes covered in butter wih sliced spring onions on top mmmmmmm! I loved my great aunt , she was never a battle axe with me AND she taught me how to make the best boiled potatoes!!!

I like roast potatoes, or baked. Chips are ok occasionally and I'm surprised a five-year-old isn't keen on them. There are lots of ways in which you can dress potatoes, and most of them are quite palatable. I like mashed potato as well if made from real potatoes... I hate the Smash mix, as it has no taste, whatsoever. I like my potatoes when mashed, to have black pepper and butter mashed in with them. These are particularly nice with sausages and veg. Yummy! I like to eat jacket potatoes with curry, prawn and thousand island dressing, chili con carne, or cheese filling. Wow, I like potatoes just about all ways you can come up with. Maybe your little man would like a jacket potato occasionally? Brightest Blessings.

I think girls are more up on what's healthy. Males will eat whatever is easier to eat, and chips are very popular. I like them and eat them in rotation with the others, but I try not to eat them too often!!!

Thanks Darkwing - you certainly do like potatoes and I'm getting hungry now! My son will eat potatoes occassionally and does enjoy them in most forms - think he's going through that teenage moany thing and just decided he wanted to be a chip freak!! Yeah my 5 year old is very up on whats healthy and she knows what she likes! xx

Weemam had been talking about making rice pudding on another site and it made me want some!!! Not sure what scalloped potatoes are? Hope you have a lovely lunch honey - its almost dinner time here and I don't know what to make!

Scallops are sliced potatoes on an oven dish with sliced onions salt and pepper.some put diced ham or sausage in it also.Press it down in the dish and add milk or cream until it comes up but doesn't cover the potatoes.Cover the dish, pop in the oven and let it bake slowly........yummmy. The starch from the potatoes makes the milk thicken a bit.You can put corn or pea or string beans along with extra meat aqnd have a nice one dish supper. When I used to work I would put this in the slow cooker and leave it all day and it wouls be ready at dinner time. Raydene

Hi, I eat mainly potatoes but I must admit that I do prefer chips over the two of these the reason I prefer chips is that they seem to taste a lot better than just ordinary potatoes, and are you looking for how to make rice pudding.

I think this is a case where you should deside what is healthier for your children. Almost everyone will tell you that chips are their favorite but we all know they are not healthy like potatoes. I think you should stick with the potatoes.

Thanks Jennifer this is true - and my kids do eat healthily for the most part - but I also believe that if you don't let them have treats then they get very greedy for the unhealthy stuff! x

I guess you will have to mix and match. Eating potatoes is far more health then chips so good for your 5 year old. Why not try making potatoes for them both done in different ways.

I'm definitely not much help to you because I like chips.. and I like potatos. If I'm eating a sandwich I'll eat chips.. with a burger its definitely fries.. with roast its potatos too.. so maybe potatos win on this one!

I like potatoes more, though I like chips as well. You can do more with potatoes. Chips arent really all that good for you, and most of them have a lot of salt.

Well now that I figured out what chips are I would have to say compromise. Some days potatos and some chips. I like both and so do my kids so I'm safe on that one.

Children always like different foods at different times, mine always had different tastes in food. The other one is the when one week they like somethng and the next week they can't stand it.

I don't have a fixed idea on this. I sometimes ask for chips, and sometimes ask for potatoes. Here in Singapore, we sometimes get another option - rice. It is not the usual white rice in asian food - in "western meals", this rice would usually be some butter rice with raisins.
