longer school days

Some schools in our area are trying out longer school days. 8 am to 5 pm and going 4 hours every other Saturday. I know in other countries kids do attend more school that in the USA, but do you think that it is good for the students to attend more school or is it harmful to them. Will they have less of a childhood?? Will this only add more stress to our kids who seem to be stressed enough already? I guess I feel that kids today have so much more to worry about then when I was a kid. But is all of this necessary to keep up with other countries?? And do our kids have to pay the price for keeping up??

Too me thats too many hours. I think they are pushing kids and it's got where they don't care and are too tired from getting too much homework. I remember going to school 8-3 to me that's good enough and now the high schools here has 4 classes instead of 6 I don't think I can handle 4 classes.

I see it in my nephew..he doesn't have time to really "care" about all the subjects now there is so much to do that it seems that sometimes he just does it so fast so that he can get done b4 bed time.

To me that seems way to long for a school day. I just don't see the advantage. I can remember back in school how hard it was to maintain concentration for even 4 or 5 hours. I just cannot see the benefit in 8 or 9 hour school days.

The article I read about this recently went into detail on what would happen during that extra time. They would be able to do more teaching & review during class, which in theory would reduce homework. Also, they would offer more "fun" classes that are educational but more nontraditional. Things that would expand the education process beyond the basics that they are limited to now. The idea of this sounds good to me. Less stress for the kids and more opportunity to learn, but not the same rote classes as they have now. I don't know about the Saturdays, but the weekdays sound good.
