I really really hate AOL now

Okay, I've been dissatisfied with AOL for awhile now but today was just the last straw. I was just recently able to get back online after being booted from the network this morning at about 11 o'clock while I was in the middle of a download.
Apparently the credit card we use, despite nowhere near the limit wasn't letting AOL withdraw a payment. So they say anyway, today was the first we heard of this. That in and of itself is odd because the one time AOL had difficulty withdrawing a payment from another credit card of ours they notified us that same day. Yet they waited three months before telling us anything and then all they did actually do to "tell us" was switch us to a "free account" and block us from dialing on. It took forever to get through to a live person to get this sorted out and it still doesn't make sense, especially since according to the credit card statements aol was getting their payments.
DSL isn't available in this area, nor cable, but satelite and broadband are. So we are looking to switch because this is just bogus now. We're looking into PeoplePC and Roadrunner, anybody have any recommendations?
Damn aoHELL

I had PeoplePC before DSL. I really liked them. I had one email. I downloaded the accellerated(sp?) page loader. It was great. We only switched because we got DSL with AT&T. WE had cable too. Not the road runner but Earthlink. It was great too. Cable is soo fast. I really miss it.
I don't blame ya. We tired AOL once. It was when the 7 was brand new. My computer kept eating the program. I couldn't get on untill I redownloaded. Which was about everyday. At the end of the trial period I called to cancell. A man took my call. AFter many minutes of trying and trying, I asked for his supervisor. I was offered 6 months free. I still said no. I finally got it turned off but it was hard.
Anyone who wants free AOL, just say you are thinking of cancelling. They will give it to ya free.

The thing is we were paying for it and they switched us to a "free account" without notifying us then they made up some bogus lie about how the credit card wouldn't let them charge us when they were clearly receiving payments. The lack of honesty is what is pssing me off, not to mentiont he service isn't that great.
So you had People PC huh? Hmm, that's actually one of the ones we're looking into. Hopefully it's much better than aol.

I had AOL several years ago. It was a real pain in the Butt. The program took up massive amounts of space on my hard drive, used far to much RAM so the computer ran slow, and booted me off at unpredictable intervals. When I tried to uninstall it, I found that even after I had supposedly got rid of it, there where still files and directories all over the place - really very invasive. Then when I called them up to say that I was canceling, I was going on to cable broadband, they managed to persuade me to keep the AOL software on. But is caused a conflict with something or other and the computer crashed and it cost me £70 or so to get it sorted out! Then AOL rang me up to ask if I had been satisfied with the service and would I recommend them to a friend. They got a very short answer!

I thought PeoplePC was one of the best. It was easy to download. I actually signed up from a points program like mypoints or inboxdollars. I don't recall which.
Good Luck! I hope you get the problem with AOL fixed and move on to a better provider.
