I have 5 cat's and I noticed that once in awhile they get a funky smell, can't quite explain it, but if the smell get's on like bedding or something you have to wash the bedding immediately because the smell won't go away. Just wondering what it is or what it's caused from?

Have you had your cats spayed or neutered? If not, they've probably sprayed to make their territory. It's something that happens when cats, mainly male cats get of mature(mating) age.

yep, all my cat's have been spayed and neutered. It's not a pea smell, it's like dirty butts or something, lol!!

the scent they use to make territory isnt a pee smell, it's a musky odor. It's hard as hades to get out..and even if they are fixed they can still spray.. that might be it. I give my cat baths, but maybe you could wash the little stinkers off with baby wipes or something. My cats feet smell ALL the time, like dirty feet/old man. haha

Yeah it could be that male cat smell. My cat's are like 6 yrs. old now so I guess it could be that. Anyway I may stick them in a bath. They don't smell constantly but once in awhile they come up to me and I'm like what is that smell. It goes away but if it get's on something it takes forever to get the smell out of whatever it is. And your right on the spelling of pea, I saw how I wrote that and I messed up, lol! Thanks for your advice!

Are they indoor or outdoor cats? If outdoors, they can be picking up something awful from garbage. If indoors it can either be ear mites, or urine, as a form of spray for territories. They can even have an infection. This is not normal, so you need the doctor to check them out.

No they used to go out but not anymore. And mind you they don't have the smell all the time it's very rarely and not all the cat's really get the smell.

They do go to the vet all the time. Their very healthy. A friend of mine said it's a scent they get when they do want to mark their territory.

Not sure what that smell is since I don't know exactly what is could be. We have boy kitties and so you know how they can get. We use Febreze in most places. The following works on ammmonia/musky odors... 1 16-oz. bottle Hydrogen Peroxide 1 TBS Baking Soda 1 tsp dish detergent (liquid) Mix ingredients into an old plastic container and stir well with a plastic or wooden spoon (do not use metal utensils or metal dishes). Once powder is dissolved, pour liquid into a plastic squirt bottle and squirt on urine spot, completely saturate the stain and surrounding area. Do not scrub or touch the spot, leave the cleaner to set and air dry for at least one hour. After it’s completely dry, vacuum the spot–there may be baking soda residue. You can wipe with a clean rag if needed. Wash all bedding as soon as possible, using a good 1/2 cup of vinegar per load (cider vinegar if you have it). This will help kill the smell. If you’re concered about lingering odors, you can also spray some vinegar & sprinkle baking powder over the now dried and cleaned stain before making a fresh bed (wait for vinegar to dry before making bed). This also cannot be kept, you mix it fresh and use it everywhere that you need to. Hope this helps you. Our feline friends do make us some extra work.

I had trouble like this.I have two cats. One devoloped an allergy.(to food)She would develope sores and lose her fur on her head mouth. My other cat that had the smelly problem ALWAYS had a smelly butt, alot of problems as a kitten with diahrrea and a huge problem with ringworm.(my whole household suffered for a YEAR!)To make a long story short, the cat with allergies HAD(through trial and error) to be put on Hill's PRESCRIPTION Diet Z/D(not Science Diet). Well the smelly cat also ate the Z/D food, could not separate the food. This was also the cure to the smelly problem. Both cats are doing perfect on this food. Too bad it costs and arm and a leg for 10 lbs.UGH! I have no other choice.Been there, done that.
