Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. You might be lucky and it is something easy to get at like the gauge fuse. Otherwise it could mean pulling the gauge pod and checking all the connections you could find. the speedometer used to die on a Grand Am I had. I finally cleaned the contacts between the gauge pod and dash.
