Performance based pay for teachers is a crock! I'm a teacher, and I should know. Some teachers work very hard to help their students work. Others manipulate everything to ensure that only the best students are in their class so that, naturally, they'll have the highest test scores. Some teachers talk a good story and fool administrators into thinking that they are doing a superior job when actually this kind of teacher is probably the worst of the bunch. Administrators have a habit of falling for this stuff, too. I've seen it happen in two different schools now. I remember one special needs teacher who wrote a glowing description of the cooking class she offered her students. She put this in the course manual. However, when pressed at an IEP meeting, she admitted to those present that about the only things her kids ever cook is hotdogs. Of course, all the principal saw was her description, and he never saw her sitting at her computer all day while her aide taught the students. Teachers would get so angry when these poor excuses for teachers got more pay that all your good teachers would quit. Teaching is a terrible job already without adding something this unfair to the mix.
