carpel tunnel syndrome

I have recently been diagonosed with carpel tunnel syndrome. Whenever I mention this to someone, they immediately ask me if I am going to have "the surgery". I find this odd. (I still have to have an EMG done, then consult with my doctor again, so I don't even know if it is warranted.) Any comments?

Sometimes if the symptoms are severe then an operation is done to decompress the pressure on the nerves and bloodvessels . If no underlying cause is found (like arthritis or hypothyroidism) then surgery might be the best option .

Exactly, but as I said, I don't know if it's warranted because I haven't had a certain test yet. It could be because of my arthritis. I've had xrays taken, but haven't heard anything from my doctor about them and won't until the end of the month when I next see him. I just think it's odd that so many people immediately ask if I'll have the surgery. If someone told me they had carpel tunnel, that wouldn't be my first question to them. I'd probably ask what they were doing for it, but not specifically ask about the surgery.

Did the doctor prescribe a course of steroids ? That is most likely to decrease the compression in the nerve sheaths . Also the choice of painkiller is important . Since you have arthritis ,you are probably familiar with the difference between painkillers like vicodine (only decrease the pain) and NSAIDs like Ibuprufen and Naproxen and Aspirin and Diclofenac ( decrease both the pain and the inflammation )

My doctor didn't prescribe anything for it. I already take Tylenol for my arthritis, though. (I used to take Naproxen but it caused me too much bruising.) Do you have a connection to the health field?

Thank you for your concern. The pain was bad enough for me to quit my job, and at this point, I don't know if it'll get any better. I have to wait and see yet.
