Driving Distractions

Watch the Road Instead of the Sign - It would be safer if people would pay more attention to the road instead of the signs.

A couple of years ago they put a new marquee sign out in front of my children's school. There are several messages that run across it one after the other, and I think that these are quite a distraction to drivers. Sometimes you will be able to read only part of the message, and need more information about an upcoming event, so do you watch the road or do you watch the sign? I have seen drivers swerve because they were reading the information displayed on this sign, and it makes me wonder if it wouldn't be safer to remove the sign. There are other signs that also fall into this category. Our bank sign displays the time plus the temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Since each displays for a length of time, and your vision is obstructed during part of this time, you have to keep looking to see the one you want. I have also seen cars swerve there. I also have to mention one billboard I saw along the Expressway a while ago. Although it was cool to look at, it was rather distracting. The graphics on it were amazing. It had what looked like real flames coming off from it. I don't remember what it said, but the words were glowing, and there were flames burning and flickering. I kept thinking how cool this would look while driving after dark... but what a distraction it would have been.

Yes, those are terrible. I have seen people drive by them turning their heads almost backwards to read them as they go past. How safe is that?
