Does Therapy Work to cure Depression or similar conditions?

Or has it worked for you? I am referring to the "talking cure" or any kind of therapy which is not solely drugs based. A guy I know suffered from depression for most of his life and he tried anti depressants which worked reasonably well but failed to stop him from wishing to die all of the time. Then he tried cognitive therapy, came off the anti-depressants and is in a position to deal with his depression without drugs which I think is pretty cool. Has anyone tried psychoanalysis or cognitive therapy or any kind and found it to be of use?

I've never had any kind of counselling or anything.. but I do know talking about things is a release.. I suffered childhood abuse for many years, so yes I do know how talking helps.. I think medicines are good too, for chemical imbalances, but if there is painful memories and such, you shouldn't just mask them over with medication.. or so it would seem to me.. :))

Thing is though, if you have friends and familiy to talk things over with that is great. But if you don't? If you want someone to talk to you, you will pay someone to listen and give advice. What if when the hour is up, you still have more to say? And they have a few other people there waiting to tell them their problems? And you, the person telling this person problems, if it were me I would feel guilty for burdening them (yes I know, even though I am paying them). Quite often this person, if they are a psychiatrist or doctor, will medicate you. I don't know if therapy as I understand it anyway, can really work!

I think it depends on what's causing the depression. If it's a trauma from childhood or any other time in a persons life, then I think therapy could be very helpful. But for someone with a chemical imbalance caused depression, all the talking in the world isn't going to undo it.
