Well, I have never read any of her works: ( and really only recently become familiar with her name. In the past 2 months I have seen Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version and the Kiera Knightly(sp) version) Sense and Sensibility and Emma. I will soon be watching War and Peace (I think that is one of hers)
Some friends who consider themselves Pride and Prejudice snobs really enjoyed the 6 hr bbc version the best. I am afraid I found that one a bit boring? i did however really like the newer version, although at times I could not understand what was being said and had to rewind or use captions.

In my opinion, the Keira Knightley version is terrible. They completely bulldozed the plot to make it more marketable and lost any sense of the subtle, dry humour that makes the books so wonderful to read. It just wasn't Jane Austen. I think she must be turning in her grave!
If you didn't enjoy the BBC adaptation then I wouldn't recommend you read Jane Austen's books. It's a fairly faithful adaptation, unlike the recent one.
The Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility is lovely. It has me in tears everytime. The book is even better.
I've read all of Austen's books and I love them all.

No we do!
I meant the 90s BBC one was a fairly faithful adaptation. The recent Kiera Knightley one wasn't!

Me, me, me! I love Jane Austen. I've read all her books and seem most of the films and adaptations. There are some new adaptations coming up on TV in the UK in the next few weeks, including Northanger Abbey, which I am looking forward to as I don't think I've seen an adaptation of that one.
The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice was more faithful to the book, and also starred Colin Firth. :) That's probably why many fans prefer it to the more recent film. There was a 1940s film of Pride and Prejudice as well starring Lawrence Olivier as Darcy.
