Speaking of spam... have you ever eaten it?

Spam - spiced ham in a can
United States
March 12, 2007 9:33pm CST
Ok, how many have eaten Spam? Spam is a spiced ham that comes in a can. The way I've had it is fried and put on bread for a sandwich. When I was a kid it was a really cheap "meat" to purchase and my mom made it frequently. I love it fried but have never had it any other way. Have you ever tried spam? Did you like it? Do you eat it often? How do you prepare it?

i eat spam once in a while. i eat it when there's nothing left to cook because it's easy to prepare. i just fry it, fry some eggs and cook rice. i remember when i was younger, my mom also prepare sandwiches using spam and mayo. we brought these to picnics. what's your favorite type of spam? i love spam lite. and spam with cheese. yummy!

I've only had the regular, original version. I'm not sure why I'm not brave enough to venture out! LOL

I really didn't eat spam until I got older and seen it in the store. But we do eat now and then. I like it fried and on wheat bread with a little mayo on it.. I also like the new flavor, "Hickory Smoked"...That is the one I really like the best. We have also made scambled eggs and diced up some spam in it.. It adds some flavor to the eggs...

Oddly enough I've never had it any other way but fried on sandwiches. I should really try it with eggs. And after Howard's recipe... yum... I might actually start buying it regularly! LOL

I actually enjoy Spam. I love to grill it or use chop it up and use it in a sandwich. My husband puts it in his spaghetti sauce (not a favorite of mine). My mother uses it in summer salads. I like to slice it and eat it right out of the can.

Wow....I haven't thought about SPAM for ages! I never really liked it too much, even as a child. My brother and I once had a competition to see who could eat the most fried SPAM, and I ended up eating so much of it that I vomitted. Needless to say, I haven't eaten any since, and I seriously doubt that I ever will again. The very thought of it makes my stomach turn.....

LOL... those kind of events can kill a taste for anything! I think it's funny to hear how many folks actually have eaten it and many love it. I don't mind it at all and enjoy it for something different.

Yeah, during our overnight preparation for our defense, we do eat spam sometimes at night, and sometimes during breakfast.. We dip the spam in a mixture of egg, sometimes in a separate way then fry it, that's it, served with iced tea..

We ate it quite often as kids. I still enjoy it once in a while, fried and served with mac and cheese! My husband doesn't care for it,though, so I use it as a secret weapon. I keep a can in the cupboard and when I don't feel like cooking I announce that we are having Spam for supper. He will usually offer to buy take-out food to get out of eating it! Then I eat it when he's not home, and get another can to keep in the cupboard. Aren't I sneaky!

LOL... we won't tell your secret! I've heard of others putting it in mac n cheese. I will have to try that as I detest boxed mac n cheese, perhaps this would help it a bit? LOL

When I was single, and living alone, SPAM was a staple. It was cheap, and you could do a lot with it. My favourite was frying it up, and putting a slice on a piece of toast, with some mustard. Yum Yum! I haven't had it in years. Check out www.spam.com there are a lot of recipes there for it.

Our dollar stores have it here for about $3 a can. There is also a version called TREET. It's a copy kat of spam. I've never tried the copy kat version though. I will definitely check out the recipes! Thanks

I have had Spam and it's actually pretty darn good in my opinion. I enjoy it a lot and in a variety of different ways. I used to eat it as a kid as my Dad prepared it for us quite often during my childhood.. And I still enjoy it to this very day.. I remember late at night when sometimes if my Dad, sibling & me would be up later in the night.. That he would either fix this or kraft mac & cheese for us.. As we sometimes all would crave midnight snacks.. I used to just love sitting there at the kitchen table watching my Dad make it for us.. I used to feel like he made it the best back then compared to anyone else who would make it for me.. I know whatever I have it.. That I will mash it up and mix it with mayonnaise and relish for a great sandwich filling or I'll just simply slice it and fry it up and serve it with a couple eggs on toast for breakfast. I really like to make it more for an easy lunch for my other half. I know he absolutely loves eating that stuff for lunch every time I make it. I do tend to make this quite often for my other half's lunch.. As it is so simple, yet convenient & tasty all at the same time for me to make in general for his lunches.. I actually really like having Spam with dinner as opposed to pork chops or steak sometimes to. It tastes so much better than any of those especially when it's fried up and served hot. It tastes amazing and there are times where my other half & me have actually had to open up a second one and fry it up too because we got through the first one without stopping. We had craved even more afterwards. When I make it for my other half's lunch I will usually make a little sandwich for myself as well. I love how it tastes when it has the mayonnaise and the relish mixed in with. It's almost what you would call "deviled ham". I know he's had something like it when he was a child but he told me that I made it better than anyone he had ever known. I've also diced it up and mixed this with a couple eggs and made a spam omelet. When I was done cooking the omelette I'd place it on a clean plate and sprinkle it with a little bit of cheese. I swear this is one of the best omelettes I've ever had and I would recommend it to anyone who wants something a bit different. You can even top it with a couple slices of tomato for some added extra flavor. In conclusion, I really enjoy Spam and I think that the ways I make it are pretty versatile. I would like to learn more spam recipes and see how else I can make that type of meat. I think it is a very versatile meat and you can use it in almost anything! . . Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

The Underwood Deviled Ham they sell in those little tiny cans is really pricey if you ask me. Using the Spam in place and creating a deviled ham spread is a great idea! Thanks!

I ate it as a kid...with lots of mustard, I think it was fried. My son begged me to buy some a few years ago, it was still as nasty as ever. And I was shocked at the % of fat in it, it is really, really unhealthy. Even the light one is unhealthy. I am really surprised that it is still around.

LOL.. it's definitely not on anyone's health food list. We actually had the Spam Mobile come here once. They gave out pieces of fried Spam and magnets, etc. It was great. LOL That was the first my kids ever had it and they did like it. We don't buy it often though, not sure why. It's so strange cuz I really like it, it's not a bad taste to me. Then again if it's healthy I see no sense in wasting it on me! LOL Just kidding! Did your son like it or no?

I think my parents had it in the house when I was a kid, but I definitely stuck my nose up at it, lol. When we went to Hawaii on vacation we discovered it's very popular there, I couldn't believe it!

I ate it when I was a kid and remember kind of liking it. But can't recall having it as an adult. Maybe I should try it again sometime to see if I can still tolerate it, or whether it's one of those things that only my young and unsophisticated tastes could tolerate!

I think the part that keeps me from eating it "regularly" is taking it out of the can and getting that... um... slime covered chunk of meat out! LOL I know, I know.. it's easily washed off and heck if I know for sure what it is... but oh it can be so deterring!

I only like spam fried and just about burnt so as I can't taste it. Lol No really. We have a joke in our family about spam. I use to work for a grocery chain and was the manager of a store. We sold about 1 case of spam a year or 24 cans. One of the managers was talked into buying a whole pallet, about 50 cases for about 50 cents off a case. I was so mad. We had no space in the back room now and he had ordered a 50 year supply of spam and a crappy deal to boot. After about a month we put it on sale for BUY ONE GET ONE FREE. We got rid of several cases in a month. When ended up having to tie up an end cap with this horrid stuff and give it away with a $10 purchase! . your friend

I used to eat it all the time as a kid. My dad grew up on SPAM and, much to my mother's horror, converted me. I haven't had it in a while, so now I want some. Spamburgers, spam and eggs, and spamwiches, I remember all those from my childhood. In college I would put spam on frozen pizza, or blend it up with some swiss cheese and sauerkraut to make Reuben dip. Thin it out with thousand island dressing. It's really good and insanely cheap. Now I've got a serious craving. I think I'll do spam-and-pineapple kebabs. Great on the grill!

Spam Sandwich - fried spam on a sandwich.. one of the many ways to enjoy Spam!
LOL.. if it helps any my recent discussion also made me hungry for it. When I bought groceries this week I got some for us to have fried spam sandwiches and also a can for us to try Howard's idea!!! Oddly enough, my mom laughed when I bought it, picked up a can and went "wow, we haven't had this in ages! I'm getting some too!" LOL I think Spam should start paying me a salary!!!! lol

Ok, I'll admit to having eaten Spam as a child, either in sandwiches or fried as part of dinner. I never really liked it, though. I much preferred the canned corn beef. These days, I don't eat either.

I can honestly say that I have never, not once, not ever eaten spam. Even in the day when I ate pork, I did not eat Spam. The idea of this slimey block of pig in a can... No way jose. Besides, the pork in Spam can only come from a factory farm .... oh no I won't ever Never never never

Yes I have Spam, I think it is really good! I love it fried on toast with cheese and an onion slice Yummy! Yes I have it often about twice a week, I like the turkey Spam too. I could never figure out why some people hate it?? There is nothing gross in it. I think it is the name.

I think you're right... there's something about the name. It's nothing more then spiced ham so I'm not so sure why people love to hate it either. I kind of like it, although it is very salty!
