yes they need a lot of help - there is an organization out there called "Invisible children" that is trying to help raise awareness for some of the problems going on over in Uganda that I would reccommend anyone getting involved with. We don't realize how good we have it there's thousands upon thousands of innocent victims in Africa suffering simply because of where they weren't as privelaged as some of us to be born in a country that would help them and protect them.

I am very happy to see that some people realize this point. I was hoping for a huge response from tons of people aware of the pain in africa, this discussion just goes to show that we need to work harder to educate people.

cut & pasted from my blog ways you can help - "Everyday, the 2.5 million people chased from their homes in Darfur face the threat of starvation, disease, and rape, while the few lucky enough to remain in their homes risk displacement, torture, and murder. We must continue to do all we can. Would you join in calling on President Bush and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to do more? Visit http://www.savedarfur.org to do so." http://www.myspace.com/savedarfurcoalition http://www.myspace.com/help_save_darfur http://www.myspace.com/giveshelter http://www.myspace.com/fordarfur http://www.myspace.com/save_darfur http://www.amnestyusa.org/countries/sudan/activism.html http://www.stopgenocidenow.org/iact/ http://www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_do/where_we_work/sudan/emergency/index.htm http://www.waronwant.org/Crisis+in+Darfur+%96+Take+Action+Now+8489.twl

No, I think the help provided by UN is not useful and will not be useful. We can help a lake to conserve but how can we save a ocean from drying?

I cannot agree more that africa needs help. Africans are suffering and dying through no fault of their own, and if we have the ability to get rid of such injustices in this world, be it through monetary donations or food distribution etc, then it is out duty as global citizens to do our part. but let us not forget that there are also many other peopl sharing similar fates in other parts of the world as well. India, rural China, Bangladesh, and in some parts of South America. In helping Africa, let us not forget to help these people in other parts of the world as well

I think you posted a fantastic plea, and a truthful post. And I also really love the way you called us global citizens, that is the perfect term, the perfect way to look at it. I wish that title could spread to each and everyone of us around the world. A global citizen.....and I just mentioned above how I thought that the worlds suffering on a whole can only be healed by the whole world.

Africa needs help from every corner of the world. More than this, they require selfless dedicated leaders in hundreds and thousands to rebuild the nation, democratically and run the government so that people have ample employment opportunity to increase their purchasing power. Then only the economy can run.

Your right, they are so hopeless at this point it would take a miracle to find the right person to turn the situation around. I mean really, from what angle would someone even begin to tackle the battle? I would never know where to start and I think it might be nearly impossible to find someone who does........I know that I am praying for that miracle.

Africa is just fine. they need to evolve by themselves. and If they really need help, they can just ask.
• United States
22 Oct 06
Oh wow, do you think that they have never asked anybody for any help........IS THAT WHAT YOU REALLY THINK? And no, Africa IS NOT FINE!!! That is exactly why I posted this, so many people are so unaware of the world around them, just oblivious to the troubles of humanity. So study up, because you don't want to live in oblivion, do you?

So is there any middle class? And you say AIDS? I read a horrifying article about the HiV virus in Africa, it stated some scary statistics and estimations. It sounded serious, the quickness that it is spreading, and the concern for the orphaned children. What do you think Africa's biggest issue is?

Maybe she doesn't care about Africa because they've had so much help over the years and there's been no improvement, so what's the point in caring when there's nothing you can do?
• United States
18 Nov 06
Just like to intervene for a moment and say that, Africa does not really get any extra involvement in the fight to save there country. In fact I believe that many times, people have promised relief only to turn thier backs and brake thier promises.....Nothing is to broken to be fixed....if you come up with the proper strategy! I urge you not to forget about Africa.

The poor areas of Africa do need help, not from other countries though, they really need help from the richer parts of Africa, charity begins at home.

18 Nov 06
I agree that Africa needs help from any place it can get it. But if we don't teach about tolerance and kindness and compassion within Africa, than no matter how much Africa is built up we will only see africans ripping it back down. Repairing a broken country is great but unless we teach the inhabitants of that country ways to maintain it, it will fall every time. Look at Iraq, for example. Boy did we do a great job there.

It should sicken anyone that is human. There are tradegies happening all around the world, there is proabably one on your own street, fortunately some emergencies get addressed long before others. And unfortunely, the atrocities in Africa have become so severe because of the rest of the worlds negligence, and it is to bad that even if they actually recieve help immediately, it is no doubt going to take a lifetime to heal. I wish I was Oprah, had the time and the influence, and the money to help. I admire her for that attribute.

I think that is awesome....I really wish that I could. It actually a dream of mine, to help in Africa......how could I ignore thier problems, there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about Africa but I have two children so I can't just pick up and go there. Althoough, I have thought about how life would change if I did pick up my kids and go....It might be ruff, and I am not sure how it would change thier oppurtunities for the future, but I do know it would change the way they see life and security and justice and could teach them about suffering and compassion and world peace, I guess I am torn between what kind of life I want for my children.....and my husband is from a very poor country also, so I know they will get a dose of poverty there, to show them how lucky they are. I would love it if you would keep in touch with me (a complete stranger :) while you are there....I want to here everything about it, I want to see pictures, and want to here about all the little things you do to help...I think you are a nobleman for giving up luxory to help.
