But, it's one of the cheapest meats to buy when you go to the supermarket? But it costs as much as steak when you go out to eat?! Why is that? I went to KFC the other night and it was $35.00 for a 16 peice meal....which comes with 4 peices of each cut, breast, thigh, leg, and wing. I know 16 is quite a few peices but still, I think that's expensive. Everything costs so much...I'm broke...Life stinks, lol. Why do you think that it costs so much for cheap ole chicken????

I don't think it is chicken itself that is expensive.. it's more the KFC brand that is expensive. I think you can definitely get it cheaper if you buy it from elsewhere.

I totally agree with you, I can buy a hot, whole roasted chicken for $10 from the supermarket. KFC is expensive, I guess that's why they are everywhere... they can afford to be ;)

I believe it's all the 'extra costs' that you have to pay. Here in Thailand you can buy a whole barbequed chicken for the same as about two small pieces in KFC. The cost of rates and rent, franchise fees, utilities and labor have to be added to get a figure, and then you have add taxes and interest, not forgetting profit amd wow, you can see how they arrived at the term 'nuggets' for a few small chunks of chicken.

everything is a lot when you go out to eat. Like a cup of special coffee that cost 5.00 a cup when you can nearly buy the whole can for that and gets tons of cups!

Yes chicken is expensive. That is why I fry my own chicken at home. it is lots cheeper if you buy a whole chicken at the store and take it home and make it.

The reason is two fold, The first is because people are willing to pay the price, and the second is not the price of the meat originally, but the cost to get it to you, through the system, Rent utilities, fix costs and the biggie the person that prepared it and handed it to you. Every time we have a gas hike we end up paying for it not just in our cars but because food for the most part is transported from point A to point B And some one has to pay, and it sure in heck is not going to be the person that is in business to resell.I live in the center of the capitol of the Blueberry world, now you would think we would get blueberry's cheap, not so much, Because they are fresh and local we pay a premium, So I try to go and pick my own at u pick farms if I am able. But any food that is put in a system Farm, slaughters house, butcher, store, is going to cost because every hand that touches anything must be paid , and you know the wages some of those people are pretty good. also I forgot transportation along the line. I am surprised that in some instances we get our food as cheaply as we do.

It is funny isn't it. It is crazy. The only reason I can come up with is the extra care you have to take to make sure no one gets food poisoning. When I was working in food service, they told us it was the most dangerous food.

I really do not know why and I am not to keen on KFC as I am sure the over charge to. I always find that they cgarge far to much for what you get. I would rather buy the ready cooked Cjicken Supermarket which is certainly a lot cheaper lol. I do not understand why they charge so much at a Take away for Chicken.

well KFC is a very expensive fast food chain. Chicken is usual the cheapest thing on the menu when you go to an actual restraunt. at KFC you are paying for the the name.

It's because all the steroids and anti biotics they inject into the chickens are so expensive. They try to create a chemically induced super chicken and you have to pay for the chemicals. Pardon my synicism. I always go for free range meat. In restaurants I opt for pasta or seafood. With seafood all you have to worry about is Mercury poisoning. LOL

And you know, I'm not sure but I think in the grocery store, ounce for ounce, you are paying more for the chicken than you are for the beef.

why don't you just cook chicken at home? $35 could make a few home cooked meals and at least you know exactly what you are eating!

That's a good question......but is $35 really all that much for not having to cook?By the time you figure your time spend preparing, cooking and cleaning up you would charge that much as well. The only thing is....if you cook at home you don't get paid for your time. It's not the chicken that's expensive....it's the convinience:)

I think its because its a fast food- and your also buying the brand name the chicken goes by like KFC, its expensive because of the tax, the crew members, the oil, the facility they put up to be the restaurant etc... Here in the philippines a 16pc bucket meal will cost i think to about P 800.00 eight hundred pesos already- and thats too much of a money to spend on food unless there is really 16 of you who's going to eat it. That's why back here, eating at fastfood chains can be considered a luxury... =)

Yes it is true eating enywhere out in a restaurant or a hotel is so expensive. But here in Mumbai, India thatnk god there are still good road side food available. Which is very very cheap and u can easily survive with that. Instead of going to hotels & restaurants to eat it's better to get some chicken home and cook and eat atleast if u r alone u can eat easily for 2-3 days. Over here in india u can easily survive with roadside food called "Kebab Pav" & "Vada Pav" only for 1 dollar. U can survive with this for the whole day. "Kebab" is made out of Goat's Meat. They fill them inside a slice of bread with onions and some spicy home made sause on it and it tastes awesome. With a dollar u can easily eat upto 1- Kebab Pav. Hehehe.

That is so funny that you did this topic. I was just thinking this very same thing the last time I got carry out from KFC. Their prices are so darn high anymore, it's ridiculous. I usually dine inside as the one in my town has a buffet, all you can eat for around $7 for supper time and $5 for lunch. Much more worth the money. Plus they vary the side dishes daily.... some pretty good homemade stuff too. But chicken shouldn't be all that expensive, I agree.

I also think its a C.Y.A situation. After owning a cafe, I know that cooking chicken so people don't get sick is very important. So, they might pay higher wages at KFC to ensure they get decent staff who care enough about doing their job properly (I'm assuming they pay more then McD's or BK.. I would if I owned a KFC..)

Its actually cheaper to make it yourself. I think its the brand that your paying for not so much as the food that your buying. I think that is very expensive for 16 peices of chicken. No wonder why I don't buy KFC anymore! :)
