I think this group discussion is of least importance when the nature of job is very simple as a booking clerk at the railway booking window or a peon to work in office or an accountant who has to go the books of accounts keeping all the life time. I mean unless the task you are to work is related to the type of discussing some issues with so many in your whole life in that job should not check any discussion skills before selecting the person for a job. ONly when the job is like salesman or a marketing personnel or a manager who always comes in contact with the people and has to convince the people or costomers for the profit intention of the organization, one should not face this "group discussion hurdle in getting a job.

companies select right candidate having good communication skills thru Group Discussions . Now a days team work is very important in most of the companies . communication skills play an important role in team works . Team leader and members have to express the ideas in a clear manner . This is possible only if companies select the deserving persons having good skills ...

Some companies do panel interviews in order to lessen the applicant's need to go back and forth for single interviews. A little intimidating for the applicant but it's a kind of test to see how well you can cope under pressure.
