I do sometimes make exact change at the register - I do sometimes resort to using only change at the register. Why are we made to feel so rushed by foot tapping patrons behind us, that we do not bother to use our change at the register? I do not think it is because we are too lazy to count it out - but that those behind us are too impatient to wait 2 seconds more.... sort of the same reason I do not balance my check register at the checkout, the cashier is already piling up the next customers groceries on the bag it side.(how rude is that?)
don't you miss the sound of a real register tallying up the purchases instead of the bleep bleep bleep bleep of products indiscriminately passing over the laser eye, carelessly heeped into a pile?

Thins don't get quite so rushed here, but sometimes i feel like i have to get out of the way before even putting my wallet back in my bag for the next customer to be served, though mostly only in supermarkets. It's more common for people to use a credit/debit card over here than cash, and i hardly ever see people using cheques these days, they're practically obsolete!

I know what you mean, sometimes the person bagging your stuff gets yours mixed with the next person's in line because the checker has already started ringing their stuff up. Forget balancing the checkbook, I don't even have time to put my change purse away or wallet. You feel so rushed to "get out of the way" The only thing that bothers me is when people try to pay all in change. Not just a dollar or two, but they literally "pour" change all over the counter and start counting out pennies. I have no problem using change, but roll it at home first !!
