dude almost all systems are now having the onboard vga . i think on board vga only includes some extra memory dedicated for video display purpose but the vga cards like nvidia and ati have additional features than dedicated memory.and some even have algorithms for imroving video quality in case of bright ness and other perspectives. i use nvidia card

Using a video card is better than using the on board VGA because on board VGA uses the RAM and processor resources than would gradually slow your PC's performance.

On board video uses a portion of your RAM while a video card has its own memory. If you are planning to play games with heavy graphics and needs a lot of memory, I suggest you use a separate video card. If you are just planning to use your computer for internet surfing then I suggest you use on board video because you will save a lot of money with this.

Definitely the PCI-E or AGP video adapters made by NVIDIA, ATI, etc. are better than on-board videos. Why? because they have separate memory, meaning they do not consume part of the RAM module of your PC. Onboard videos use up part of the RAM installed in your PC, from 32- to 512 MB may be deducted depending on the settings from your total RAM if you use on-board videos

Actually, nobody here has mentioned that on board video uses BOTH your Processor AND RAM to power the video. It drains your system even more if you do any gaming. There are integrated graphics by NVidia and ATI which are much higher quality, but they still use your system resources. A seperate video card has its own processor (GPU), and its own RAM (VRAM). It will even have its own heatsink and fan too keep it cool. Since the card does all the work by itself, it has the power to render better graphics in games at a higher speed without affecting the rest of your computer.

even if you are not planning for some heavy gaming, i suggest u should still go for some entry level cheap graphics card. this will free your RAM for Operation System and application purpose and considerably improve your normal performance of your system.
