We all know it was Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb. 9 out of 10 people know it was Edison. But a friend told he wasn't. JOSEPH SWAN did. Anyone knows SWAN? Can anybody explain?

As far as I learnt it is THOMAS EDISON. You yourself saying 9 out 10 people believe in Edison. Which is more 9 or 10? go with 10 lady. These are just meaning-less people who create waste rumours.

Joseph Swan along with many others did not invent the incandscent lightbulb. Although Swan developed a lamp that was great for public displays, after a short period of time they would cease to work because of an imperfection that created large amounts of dust and sutt that blocked out the light. Swan's lamp in fact was not practical throughout England until word of Thomas Edison's perfection of the lightbulb reached England and Swan was able to make modifications to his lamp....So the 9 out of 10 people who believe that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb are correct. Edison actually sued Swan for using his product after it was already patented.

Sir Joseph Wilson Swan - Sir Joseph Wilson Swan was an English physicist and chemist, most famous for the development of the light bulb
Swan received a Britsh patent for his device in 1878,about a year before Thomas Edison. Swan had reported success to the Newcastele Chemical Society and at lecture in Newcastele in February 1879 he demostrated a working lamp. Starting that year he began instaling light bulbs in homes and landmarks in england. In 1880, Swan gave the world's first large-scale public exhibition of electric lamps at Newcastele. In 1881 he had his own company, The Swan Electric Light Company, and started commercial production. in 1883 the Edison & Swan United Electric Light Company was established. Known commonly as "Ediswan" the company sold lamps made with cellulose filament that Swan had invented in 1881. Varation of the celluose filament became an industry standard, except with Edison company.Edison continued using bamboo filaments until the 1892merger that created General Electric, and that company then shifted to cellulose.

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. I'm not sure who Joseph Swan was but he may be something to do with the invention of safety matches, as in Swan Vesta? WOW... I looked it up and it seems he just beat Edison to it! I got this information from Wikepedia..... Swan received a British patent for his device in 1878, about a year before Thomas Edison. Swan had reported success to the Newcastle Chemical Society and at a lecture in Newcastle in February 1879 he demonstrated a working lamp. Starting that year he began installing light bulbs in homes and landmarks in England. In 1880, Swan gave the world's first large-scale public exhibition of electric lamps at Newcastle. In 1881 he had started his own company, The Swan Electric Light Company, and started commercial production. Here is the URL, if you wish to read more about Joseph Swan... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Swan So, ten out of ten for your friend, who obviously was interested enough to read up on it! :-) Brightest Blessings.

Oh my! This is really interesting.. I didn't know this before. I did a check on Wikipedia, as always, and found out about the bits of facts too. Looks like we've been living under the false impression that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. I guess the truth has come to light - he simply made it better, not invented it.
