My Concern about IITians limit to their enjoyment…

Today I have read in some newspaper where it comments on the effect of internet on students which even I agree completely The news is about One of India's top engineering schools IIT – Mumbai which has restricted Internet access in its hostels, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them reclusive and even suicidal. Authorities at the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them. Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet, The old hostel culture of camaraderie and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in my opinion IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants, but their exacting curriculum, tough competition and reclusive campus lifestyle have taken a toll on students. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their hostel rooms to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog, orkutting and for gaming etc There has been a decline in academic performance and also participation in sporting, cultural and social activities has gone down… I feel that banning unlimited access to interent is the right solution as IITs are purely funded by the Indian govt and lots of crores of rupees is spent every where for IITians education, infrastructure etc, if the student instead of sincerely studying and technologically growing , takes the other part of complete fun and enjoyment , then it not only effects his overall performance but also future of the nation… So what u guys all think about it??

Sunil, you are correct in half of your opinion but, I see Internet gives platform to communicate global users and is of good help in improving knowledge base. The other good half I would add is to give some relief on Internet hours at night.

yes ur right about the other part that it gives relief from there busy schedule of day activities at class rooms and labs etc provided those surfing hours are within the limits... But due the age factor which is teenage , these people will be most interested in surfing, about making friends through internet, chatting, gaming, etc etc.....so when a student meets a person of opposite and chats then its everyone's normal tendency to chat more time and this eats up the time and will continue for hours everyday and with increased duration for the next day.... so if these internet surfing hours are limited only then they can control all these activites and can learn and njoy...
