impulsive Buyer

I am an impulsive buyer. Everytime new year comes, I always include in my resolution that I will no longer spend too much. But when I am in a Department store, I'm always tempted to buy things that for my eyes are good to look at. How can I avoid this? I really really want to save. Will somebody advise me on what to do best to remove this attitude of impulsive buying.

I tend to have that problem too. Especially in places like Target or IKEA. What I try to do is..... 1. If I don't need anything from that store I won't got in. It's just too hard for me to just try and browse. 2. If I do need to go into a store I take a list and I stay hard and fast that I can't buy anything not on the list. This usually works pretty well...althoguh someitmes I just end up making another list for next time. 3. When itnetnet shopping....which for me can also lead to some major impluse buys, I put stuff in the online "Shopping cart" and then walk away for an hour or so. Many times I find I don't really want whatever I was about to buy so I can just delete the shopping cart.

Yeah, I agree. If you don't need anything from that store, don't get in. I tried to make a list. But sometimes I'm also hard headed that I don't stick to my list. WHY? Because I know I have extra money in my pocket. THEREFORE, I should not bring extra money anymore. Thanks buddy for your advice.

I also do this. IT's bad because it can lead me to buy a lot of things that I don't really need. Then they just sit around my apartment and take up space. To cut back on this, I've been taking people shopping with me. Before we go out, I explain to them what I need to get and I ask them to keep an eye on my other purchases. My boyfriend has gotten really good at this because he will stop me and ask "Do you really need this?" or "When are you going to wear that?" It really makes me think things through. Sometimes, when I'm out shopping alone, I'll simply tell myself "Go home and wait a few days. If you still can't get it out of your mind, it will still be here for you to come and get. If you forget about it in a matter of days, chances are it's an impulse thing." I find that really works for me because most times a few days later, I can't even remember what is was that I wanted so bad.

Yes that's true. I sometimes tell myself, "okay you can go back there anytime." And then after days had passed I soon forget all about it. But the most important thing is really not to bring my credit card or not to bring extra money to avoid unwanted purchases. Thanks for your advice.

To be honest, I just don't go into the stores anymore. When I need something, I look online (I can't shop online, because we aren't using our credit cards anymore) to find the item that I think would work, and then I send my husband. Something I've heard suggested is to take a picture of the thing you are saving for and stick it to your debit card. Everytime you go to buy something, you'll see the thing you want. Then you think - do I want this more than I want my goal? Anyway, good luck. It can be so hard to stop impulse buying.

If one gets addicted to impulsive buying it is difficult to come out of it.

Just avoid taking credit cards or more money with you. It can decrease you temptations to some extent.

I have the same problem. My friend who used to have the same problem gave me these tips: Don't carry extra money with you. Take only a few extra dollars of what you expect to spend. Don't carry your atm card around with you, because you're tempted to take out more money that you really can't spend. The other thing she said is to keep telling yourself you don't need it. You may want it, but you don't need it.

It's nice that you notice it early in your life, well; I would suggest that before you go out for shopping, make sure you understand the difference between wants and needs, try to convince yourself that you will just buy the things you need the most. And make a list of your priorities,If it is not in the list, control yourself and resist your weakness, i assure you if you tried it once, twice or until 2 weeks of controlling yourself to be an impulsive buyer, you will see that you can easily stay away from buying the so-called "wants", and you will be the master of your life.

I am also an impulsive buyer. You could use my tips and trick's, they have helped me out a lot to keep from spending a ton of money on things that I don't need. Before I go into a store, I jot down all the things that i need from there. I only take in enough money plus a few dollars extra just incase, so that I don't spend it on other things. If you have a habit of not getting what you need and purchasing other products instead, try doing your shopping online or have someone else to do it for you. I have to set myself an allowance each week so that I don't overspend and I can only spend my allowance if I am conservative throughout the week. I hope this helps.

You might also want to write down a budget. Sometimes writing it down can help you better manage your money. And if you budget in a certain amount of fun money, you can still buy things you want while remaining on budget.

That's right, BUDGETING is the answer. In budgeting, that already includes making the list with corresponding prices on each item listed and then bring only the amount as stated in the list. Thank you for your contribution.

Why don't you freeze your credit cards in the freezer this doesn't damage them, then by the time they are unfrozen you can have a think about whether you really need to make that purchase or not

I used to be the same way! I fell into debt but couldn't help spending more. I just found other things to do. Spending more time with my family and friends, organizing my closets, going for a walk. I found that I was shopping when I was bored. Take up a hobby. Even if the hobby isn't free, you'll probably still be saving some money somewhere.

the least we can do is to prepare a list of what we need to buy and follow this list strictly.. we need also to bring a limited amount of money commensurate to the amount of the things in the list.. thus, we are actively restricting ourselves from overspending and impulse-buying..

I am trying to work on the same goal because we could always use the extra money I spend on things I don't really need so thanks for posting this so I can get some ideas. Just think everytime you want to buy something "Do I really need it" if you can answer no then try your hardest to just leave that item at the store. Or better yet, don't go to a store where you know you might make an impulse purchase.

Whenever you are going into a department store, be sure to leave your extra cash and credit cards at home. Otherwise you will be able to quickly purchase items that you might later regret. Just keep in mind that it is the store's job to make you spend your money. They would not care if you spent all your money with them and had no money to eat or place to live. They would not care if you lived in the street. Retail stores are not your friend and provide a temporary fix for everyday problems. With that being said, if you can afford a few purchases now and then, why not? Treat yourself occasionally and you will be less likely to splurge.

It's really tempting to buy things that we really like even if we don't need it that much.If I have the money meaning extra money, I usually buy the thing that I really like but if I went malling with just enough money, I would think it twice or even a hundred times coz I'd rather buy things that is really needed and of used at home like foods.

I dont know if I can help ya :( I do it too! I'd say make a list AND STICK TO IT! Sometimes I will look at something and try to figure out if I REALLY need it or just WANT IT. But a list SHOULD help but no promises! If I am gonna buy something I need to really have a use for it. I cant tell ya how many notebooks & pens I have bought over the years IT WOULD FREAK YA OUT! So I am now like NO more notebooks! Containers I LOVE THEM! But if I am gonna buy a new one I gotta have a place and purpose for it and not just cause its cute! Hope this helps. Good luck (to us both! *L*)

My advice is to stay out of stores!! That is probably the easiest thing to do...i have done this and it works...find a hobby to replace your shopping hobby such as reading or whatever...but do it!

The soulution is really very simple, make a list of the things that you need and only take enough cash to buy the things on your list.

me too is an impulsive buyer. when i see one especially cellular phone, i cant stop myself thinking of it.. thinking how much money i have on my pocket.. whew!! i know this is a bad habit which i want to stop.. After recalling the past mistakes i had made in spending in luxurious items i keep myself on praying to stop this vices coz it really affects our budget. think of your children.. do you think you can handle all the expenses when they reach their college.. think intelligently which to buy first of course our basic necessities. then if there's an excess its up to you if you will deposit it in your bank account or buy for a gift for yourself. you needed it of course.

First before going for purchasing, list the things which you want to buy and make the calculation how much it costs. Then addion to that have only little amount for emergency, ie to buy unexpected things. Dont carry the amount more than that. Beyond to that if you want to buy something, keep it in your mind and buy it next time.. Or else think that already you had such things, definetly you can avoid this...
