this doesn't make sense to me. do you leave the same amount for a waiter at a buffet that you would at another restaurant. they don't do anything but clear the plates.

I tip a few bucks because they do bring out the drinks and clear the plates. So they are doing something and I am sure they get paid low because they depend on their tips

That's basically how I am. While they don't serve my meals, they do bring out my drinks (unless it's like Hometown Buffet and the drinks are self-serve, too) or cleanup the plates on my table. My general rule about buffets is that if the service is fair and they are good about requests (extra napkins, drinks in a good timely manner) then i tip between 7%-10%.

I do tip waiters. Usually just a couple of bucks, if they offer decent service. But if their service is bad they can forget about it.

I only leave a cople of dollars if they keep my husband's drink filled and bring all of the sauces he asks for. He is high maintenance, so I have to tip. He should be so lucky not to be overweight with all of the sauces he drowns his food in. He runs our waitresses ragged with all of the extras he wants. Even at a buffet he can find something missing that he needs, so if the wait staff keeps up with that, then I tip. When I go without him, I give them a dollar per person at the table if they had to refill drinks and bring new plates. I don't care about 5 extra dollars if I enjoyed my meal. They are working and if they are nice and do a good job, then why not share some money with them. It isn't that much anyway. The only time I don't tip is if they are a lazy person who doesn't care about what kind of job they are doing, or if they were obnoxious and kept coming to the table and removing plates while we are still eating off of them. I have had that happen a lot. I would rather have to get everything for myself when I am at a buffet to tell you the truth. They really only need a busboy and a table full of condiments and a place to refill your drinks. That should be enough in a good buffet place. Having wait staff isn't really necessary in my opinion.

I do tip them. Usually there are 5 of us that go and I give them $7. They do clear the plate, sometimes several times, bring you drinks, and then they still have to clean up the table when you are done. And with me having been at that table with 3 kids, good luck to you!

i don't leave any tip at buffets. The couple of times I have gone, they do only bring plates and supposed to fill up our cups, but 99% of the time, I end up having to go get plates and/or our drinks. So, I don't leave anything for them.
