I dug a new flower bed last spring and it is in desperate need of nutrients.. I want to do this as organically as I can- but my question is can I do something now to help it before Spring planting (in a month and a half) or is it too late for me? I know that I should have been throwing stuff in there all winter and I failed to do so. I need to know what to put in it and how. Can I throw it on top of the soil or does it need to be dug out or raked in? I have heard of crushed egg shells. What about banana peels? Do they need to be broken up? What about used coffee grounds? Need suggestions from the pros please! What do you use?

There are two schools of thought on this one. I have done both and had similar success. I do the 'put it on top' method and then let the worms work the nutrients down. There is also the opinion that highly nutritious additives are not meant to be anywhere near the roots and are actually harmful and will retard growth. It will really depend on what you want to grow. Choose your plants and then look into their requirements (nitrogen, bone meal, ericacious compounds, etc). You can also add a nice mulch to seal in misture once you have added your supplements, but make sure the soil is wet when you apply the mulch. ALso, a nice 'compost tea' is great to boost your plants' health. If you have manure, dump a cuple shovel fulls inoa bucket, then fill to the top with water and let it sit for a week or so. Toms love it!

I would imagine that turning the soil would be a must. After all the winter snow and ice and rain that will have compacted the soil, turning it will help to aerate it and make it more receptive to receive the nutrients and to filter water or nutrient solution. A trip to your local gardening center might be helpful. I'm certain someone there would be able to point out a great nutrient-rich topsoil or solution to apply to your flower beds to help boost their flower growing/flower sustaining capabilities! :-)

The banana peels work best if dried then crushed. You should add bone meal as well as blood meal. It should be added frequently. The egg shells are good but they will do you no good this year. Sprinkle the organic elements onto the surface of your soil. Then work them in. If you want to be totally lazy you can put the stuff on the surface now then work it in as you plant your annuals. I started a discussion about my organic secrets. Feel free to look.
