And, have you passed it onto to anyone else? All needlecrafters are welcome to reply! My mother taught me when I was young when I complained of being bored one day. She also taught me embroidery and needlework. I'm rarely bored anymore and she's been gone for 3 1/2" years now. My girlfriend's daughter wants to learn but doesn't quite have the patience yet.

My mother tried to teach me to knit but I couldn't get the hang of it. A few years later, when I was expecting my first child I bought a learn how book, and taught myself. After that marriage failed, I continued to knit for my little boy. Later on, I remarried and my new mother in law taught me to crochet. She taught me with a size 14 hook and size 30 thread--------------looking back I think she didn't like me very much. But I sure did learn.

I had to laugh at your post! How you ever learned with 30 thread and size 14 hook is a wonder! I work that small alot but don't know if I could have ever learned it if taught in that size. I keep thinking I'd better use up all of the size 30 thread I have stashed before my eyesight gets any worse!

LOL, yep, I think it is insane to try and teach anyone with that size items. I did a lot of pulling out stitches and redoing, I can tell you. But maybe Grannie [as everyone including her kids call her] knew me better than I thought. Rebellious know it all that I was way back then, I KNEW anything that old woman could do I could surely do better. I am now older than that old woman was back then, and she is going to be 91 come July, she is still finding mistakes in my work!!! [love her to pieces]

I bought a book called "I can't believe I'm crocheting" and i was completely lost so i asked one of the girls that i worked with to show me single crochet.. and once she showed me i kinda picked up everything else on my own.

It's always so much easier when someone actually shows you, isn't it? Especially if you're looking at a diagram; it's hard to tell what thread loops where! I'm trying to teach myself tatting, but no luck yet. Thing is, I don't know anyone who knows how to tat to 'show me'!

My mom showed me how to crochet when I was a girl. I perfected it when I was older and some friends at work were into crocheting and I wanted to make a project like they were doing. Sometimes, some young woman ask me how to do it. I try to show them, but usually their patience is to short. I have a girl that wants me to show her but she is left handed and I am right handed. I will still try my best to show her though. I usually start them out with a scarf which is pretty easy.

I've been told that if you do your work in a mirror, and have the left handed student watch the mirror, instead of you, it is easier for them to learn. They can see it how it looks for them. I've tried to teach a left-handed roommate to crochet. She got as far as making chains. Used a whole skein. LOL! She couldn't figure out how to go from there. (she was quite impatient, too!) Good luck with your teaching. I'm sure your little girl will appreciate it!

My grandmother taught me when I was about 8 or 9. She taught me lots of things, croctet, sew, play piano. I miss her dearly. I learned to knit on my own, as no one around knew how. Thank goodness for the Reader Digest book of needle crafts. I always wanted to learn to knit, and make hairpin lace, but alas, that's a dieing art, and I can find no help on those two subjects.

I've wanted to learn hairpin lace as well as tatting. I've made a few attempts at teaching myself to tat but have trouble with the first stitch. Of course, I read that's the hardest part of learning to tat, once you get the first stitch down you're on your way! (So they say....)

When I was very little before I started school I would beg to go to Granmama (Father's German/French Canadian Mother)big 17 room house. She took in boarders and there was always interesting people there.Granmama was ver strick about things like saying the rosery before you sleep and upon rising and again at noon after lunch. She had gotten a new rosery for me cause she thought I was old enough for my own and said I could put in a drawer so not to loose it.In the drawer were all these needles and when she told me what they were for ai ofcourse wanted to know how.She taught me knit, crochet, tat, embroidery, and all the needle crafts including hot to darm my da's wool hunting socks before I was 5 years old and I still use those skills today. Thanks for reminding me of my Granmama. What a lovely memory! My grandmother had a lot of fillet crochet in her house. But at the time, I didn't have an interest in crocheting. I wish I had asked her to teach me.

I started crocheting when I was 10 years old. It was one of our projects in school. My mother taught me how to do it. Until now I still crochet. Most of the works I finish, I give to my friends. I feel more motivated to finish a pattern when I am doing it for somebody else.

Maybe you should think about selling some of your items.

I don't actually remember how I learned, although I think it was from a book because no-one in my family crochets except for me and my younger sister (whom I taught).

My mom taught me how to crochet and knit when I was young. When I was in middle school my friends and I used to sit around at school crocheting. It's not like we knew what we were doing, but we had fun. I just picked it,crocheting & knitting, back up a couple of years ago because my daughters wanted to learn. Now I just can't get enough of it.

My mother taught me the chain stitch and the single crochet and after that, I taught myself other stitches. Though to this day I do not do much fancy stitces (I say very colorful words at pineapples LOL), I am proud of what I can do. She taught me to crochet when I was in 5th grade.

My ex-sister-in-law taught me to crochet and I really enjoy making afghans that can be worked as one piece. I have done the squares and strips that you have to put together and find the task of joing all the pieces tedious at best.

I have to credit my mother-in-law for getting me interested. She kept saying she was going to teach me but we never seemed to find the time. Finally, she gave me a book for Christmas and I have been hooked ever since!

my mother taught me how to crochet--don't remember how old I was. She is a 'casual' crochet, though, so I never learned anything beyond the basics and when we do crochet, it's simple things. I don't know if I have the patience for the complex stuff. The thing about it is my mother is left handed. Luckily, so am I, so she could teach me, but I have trouble teaching/learning from anyone else! It's also hard to follow instructions for different stitches. Maybe that's why I keep it simple!

I taught myself to crochet at age 12 during school recess time, as I was bored. My girl-friend and I spent our time learning together. I went on to learning more about crochet from a small paper book, "How to do crochet". I followed the photos & instructions and was able to learn. Years later I also taught myself to knit, the same way...from a book. I love the feel of the yarn in my hands.

My mother taught me - maybe I was about seven. The first craft we learned at school was crocheting. It was in the 50s - a long time ago.. I am not sure I have taught someone crocheting, but I hope they has been inspired when they have seen my generation using this craft..

I taught myself how to crochet and knit when I was about 20 years old while still in college. I needed to find something to do with the extra time I had besides sitting around on the couch playing video games. I am a visual learner so I picked it up fast from watching a crochet video online. I have taught my little sister how to crochet but she doesn't do it really lol. She rather stick to drawing and doing watercolors. I found the needlearts very therapeutic. I am currently searching for some cute patterns to do as I haven't picked up my hook in a long time and got a knitting project that has been collecting dust lol.
