Hey out there, all you genealogy buffs? Have you ever hired a professional genealogist? How was your experience? Did the researcher give you your money's worth? I have recently opened a genealogy research center in Texas. We also have offices in Maryland. I am a veteran researcher and the genealogy center is a new adventure for us. Tell me about your experience with professional researchers.

Hi Terilee, I have not hired a family researcher, but I am trying to get into the business myself. I have a library degree with some coursework in archives and some experience doing historical research, but right now I'm just working for a library software company. Do you have any advice for someone trying to start a public history research business? Any courses, articles or books you can recommend? Thanks!

I have done professional research on a sub-contract basis. I have found it's a good idea to prepare a report and provide photo copies of documents. I keep my client updated by email as to where I am searching and types of records. Since I primarily work for other professionals - and have never had a complaint. It's all about communication - before during and after.

You're right Jans5411, communication, that's the key. Reports and documentation. Thanks for your response.
