Are you born with the talent for cooking?

I was thinking about when I first started cooking. I have been cooking since I was a kid, old enough that my mom would let me cook things over the stove. When she realized I wasn't going to hurt myself or burn the house down she let me cook quite often. Do you think you are born with a talent for cooking or is it something you just learn to do? Do you think you cook better the older you get?

i learned cooking when i was in junior high. i came from an all girl school so we had cooking classes, and baking classes the year after that. that was the only time i cooked. but recently, i rediscovered cooking. i don't have the talent for it. maybe because my mom doesn't like cooking as well. i did discover though that cooking could be so much fun! and there's a feeling of accomplishment if others say what you cooked tastes good. i think i would be cooking from now on.

Those were the good ole' days when we could cook in school. We had them too. Cooking is so theapeutic sometimes. And yes, it's awesome when you feel you have created something yummy that everyone likes. It gives you a warm fuzzy when everyone says it tastes good.

every time somebody tells you your cooking is yummy, it just gives you the drive to cook more. i just hope they are sincere when they say my cooking is yummy, or is it because they're my family and they have no choice?

Cooking is just something I learned myself. My mother doesn't cook well. She only knows how to cook the basic dishes, nothing special. Even my married sisters learned on their own, from other people and by following recipes. Those who are born with talents for cooking have the ability to come up with original dishes. I don't. But still I love to whip up dishes that I adore from recipes I pick up from the internet. I have an adventurous taste and usually uses ingredients that are not normally used in Filipino kitchen like basil, wasabi, etc. I usually end up eating it myself. Nobody appreciates. Sigh.

I bet if you tried you could come up with an original dish. To do that, you only have to modify one ingredient. That makes the dish yours. Anything that changes the outcome and/or taste changes the dish.

I think you are born with talent you just have to discover what.As for cooking and and anything you want to do you have to be interested in it and want to do it.I think cooking is something you can learn though as apose to other things. You can learn cooking from books and experimenting with different things in the kitchen

I was DEFINITELY not born with a talent for cooking. I actually screwed up macaroni and cheese before. However, the older I get, the better my cooking is! I'm actually making things like double baked potatoes, chicken casseroles and such! So I'd definitely say its something you get better at as you get older!

I think this talent is learned, from a long and hard time of becoming an expert cook. For me, I indulged myself into cooking because I got tired of eating the usual foods that we eat. And my father was working on a vessel abroad, he introduced to us some more ways in cooking and preparing meals. My mother was not that intensed in learning it, so I was the one to absorb all the skills in the kitchen. And I made more broad knowledge in cooking, I experimented on other recipes and made some of them as my own trademark. To distinguish my own cooking skills from others.. I think I am still eager to learn more as I grow older, as cooking has many ways and there are more recipes from different cultures and countries that I want to venture myself upon..

The deeper you go into the art of cooking the more your intensity grows. The more you want to make your signature dishes come alive. It's interesting to take foods from other cultures and adapt them with your own trademark. A test we had to take in chef's class was to take two seperate and distinct ethnic foods from different parts of the world and come up with a new and likable dish. I chose Mexican food and Asian or Oriental food and came up with an asian style burrito. I combined a dish much like Sukiyaki and placed it on a warmed flour tortilla shell which had been spread with quacamole. I topped it with a salsa (a mix of mexican salsa and pinapple). It turned out really good. I got an AAAA.

BUt I'm trying to learn how. lol :) I only know the basics but when it comes to cooking big recipes or the main dishes, that I don't know already. My mom always tells me that I should learn how to cook now especially that I'm getting older. :)

yes, i think about when I first started cooking also. 5 years old with my Pillsbury bake set. chuckle....but then I seriously started to learn how to cook at age 7. I think you have to enjoy the process. I also think that people born with artistic talent are also born with a natural ability to cook. But the basics like anything else I do believe must be learned as a foundation to become a better cook with a flair for creating. I enjoy cooking. It is meditative for me and a way I show my love for my family. My background is Italian, and our lives always revolved around food. Every holiday, family get together. Food is memories for me and I love to teach others.Yes I think I get better the older I get. Absolutely. The most fun I think is when we are snowed in and I have minimal things in the pantry and I create a wonderful soup or dish without fussing that much. And I think wow, this is so so good. Sometimes I surprise myself. Thank you for this discussion.

Yum. I love Italian. And I remember the Pillsbury bake set. It is a process and I agree with you. I think artistic people can usually do about anything they set their minds to.

I was not born with the cooking talent. However my wife was, she is now cooking meals for me. She was taught by her mum and ever since she has been cooking nice and tasty meals. I praised and thanked her for that. For me it's the blessing from God that He has sent her to be part of my life.

I believe cooking is a bit of a talent, but, like all things which somebody can be inclined to, can also be learned. I do not want to boast, but I happen to be an excellent cooker, I can prepare a food out of nothing, with the least of materials. Cooking involves imagination and a well developed taste. I love eat, I really enjoy a tasty food, so I think I care more to have a tasty result while cooking.

Sometimes even people who love to cook are terrible at it. It's an acquired talent. And no, getting older does not make you a better cook.
