English learning is really a heavey burden to most students in China. If they want to be admitted by a higher school, they have to pass English exam. However, English learning in China is foreign language learning, so there is not good English learning environment. Besides there aren't enough qualified English teachers and large class with more than 40 or even 50 students always makes teachers feel hard to carry out teaching activities. In order to pass exams, students have to do lots of exercises. To them, English learning isn't interesting at all. Even if they can pass exams, it doesn't mean they are good at English. They still have much trouble in listening and speaking. What is language teaching like in your country? Would you give some suggestions to students in China so that they can have some fun in English learing?

I say read. Being from America and having English as my main language I learned easiest from reading. (I'm learning French at the moment and I read a lot there as well, it helps I promise) Newspaper articles would be a good thing to start with, something thats interesting. English doesnt have to be spoken "good" it just has to be understandable. there are plenty of people who done even know english, and they live in the USA..

yes. reading is really a good way to learn a language. actually lots of students in China learn English in this way. but they can't speak so what they have learned is only "dumb English". they still can't communicate with others in English.

I agree. A lot of reading helps you go the extra mile. Learning a foreign language does not take overnight. It takes time. It also entails patience, interest and attitude from the learner. Try watching English movies of your interest too or listening to English radio programs. It will help you improve your listening and pronunciation.

I think it's really hard to understand English movies. we only learn standard English but there are so many slangs and colloquial English in some movies. of course some movies are really helpful, but some, I have to say not.

I grew up in the Philippines, lucy. Since I was a little girl, I studied Chinese, English and Filipino (our national language). But mostly, I use english when speaking with my friends. Chinese with my parents and filipino to others. Try to read more english books and look for books that teaches you how to use proper grammar. There are a lot of english words and some words may have different meanings. Grab yourself a dictionary as it can be handy at times. But reading different english pocketbooks can enhance your understanding of english more. Good luck!!!
