At 13 its hard to start instilling good reading habits. It's easier when they are younger. But there are a few things you can do such as giving them incentives to start reading, such as an award system at home. Start with book subjects that you know are of interest to your child, and keep them attainable. Make sure that your child sees you reading, and not just on the internet. Buy him/her magizines age appropriate and that holds speical interests. Set aside a period of time each day or night just for reading with no other distractions such as the TV. I bet when your child realizes that a new worlds can open up they will come to be more acceptable to the written word.

My suggestion is to find out what kind of things they are interested in. Video games, sports etc. Then find something for them to read, that is aimed at their age level, that will help them out in their chosen hobby. For example. Say they really like a certain video game, and they are always playing it. Look around online for that particular game for fan fiction about the characters in that game. There's always something around that someone has written about popular things. The same goes with TV shows. There's always fan fiction online about TV characters, especially the more popular shows and movies. Eventually, they will look for things themselves, and while they may only look for certain things in particular, they will stumble across other items that spark their interest.
