What is SIGNIFIED or meant by NOSE PIERCING and FOREHEAD MARKS in an Indian ?

I'm just curious if they signified something.. I'm curious to know. I've been to Malaysia once and when I'm there, I've seen diverse cultures. Among them are Indians, Chinese, Filipinos, the locals (Malaysians) and foreigners. I just noticed before that most Indians have special markings on their forehead. I was not able to ask or inquire back then, and I hope anyone could give me some response about this. I'm just eager to know. First-hand informations, website links will be very much appreciated.
